I had dinner with my dad and sis last night. We went out to one of our favorite Chinese restaurants nearby. It's not fancy food but yummy. Both my dad and my sister all ordered fried foods. I don't nag him about eating fried stuff anymore, I just want him to eat. He did eat well last night and finishing lots of food, a bowl of rice, a bowl of soup and the bowl of red bean dessert. Afterwards, he declared that it was one of the best meals he had in a while. Now if that wasn't a hint for me to do some more home cooking, I don't know what is. I have some time off this week so maybe I'll rustle up some things. What is your favorite home cooked meal? (ed. note: this is a cheap way to get comments)
Tomorrow is Christmas and thankfully I've all done with my shopping. My last visit was to the mall yesterday morning. I got there just as they opened so there were still quite a bit of parking spots. After getting gift cards and some stuff for my dad, I got myself a couple of CDs and declared victory. The rest of my presents were from the stores in my neighborhood. I'm indifferent towards Christmas this year. While I'm not Scrooge like (yet?), I just don't feel like celebrating. Maybe I need a visit from the 3 ghost of Christmas. With my luck though, my ghosts will only speak Chinese and berate me for not understanding my own language as well. "Ai ya, jook sing - dim shuen ah..."

my favourite home cooked meal would be my mum's pho. totally delicious. its the only meal i always praise my mum for. she lurves the praise.
christmas for me, this year, has been different. i was initially excited about it, but then i felt weird, because i didn't know who were my friends and all that. i think i just use christmas as an excuse to go out more. i'm terrible with presents this year, i just got other people to buy them, and i just chip in.
Favorite home cooked meal... hmmm... butternut squash soup? Or... lagsana! =P
Hahaha. Same here. Though the ghosts would probably chase me around, singing happy music and I'd be vomiting in my mouth while I run. It'd be even worse if it was happy Chinese music that I don't understand.
Heh...
Happy holidays...
I like curry, the ones that are made from the curry boxes...the japanese kind
it's my comfort food...
I made it on my blog!
No reason not to solicit comments...
My favorite home cooked meal? There are a lot of things I really like, but there are two that I cook (not usually together) that are really fantastic. One is my homemade buttermilk biscuits. The other is roasted root vegetables, squash, potatos, carrots, etc. with olive oil and rosemary. Both are really evocative of other times, places, and people.
Haha, that last part about the ghosts speaking only Chinese...lol.
Hmmm...favourite home cooked meal? I think it'd have to be my grandma's meatballs with Chinese mushroom. YUM!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
MMM well remembering I come from a Russian-Hungarian background it has to be the special dishes we have during the holidays. I cannot spell them but can pronounce them. They do include lamb, beef and fish. Not fried but a lot of sauces.
When cooking for me, I bake or broil fish and do some stir fry veggies.
merry ho ho Matt!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Years Matt!
Happy Merry Christmas for you and your love one.

merry christmas! hehehe i did some last minute christmas shopping too...
hrmmm home cooked meal... so hard. So many dishes my family no longer makes and i really miss them...
Top of the list includes, steamed cat fish, goat curry, ham hocks and white beans, saurkraut, and home made chow mein. My grandfather used to pan fry small batches of noodles till he had a tower of these crispy almost burnt on the outside noodle cakes, and then make a big batch with cha siu and other stuff... I miss it.
you know how i love food but when it comes to christmas, i always look for matsang. my mom says it's a chinese dish. rice (really sticky) with stuffings inside (meat, shrimp, mongo) wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. and that comes with hot chocolate e.
of course, i had this this christmas and wished they make one this new year too.
Hi Matt, you're not alone about the christmas thing. I felt let down before the date even arrived. Somehow christmas is for kids and we don't have any little ones around. I think it's better to celebrate Solstice and the return of the Light. Right now it's snowing cats and dogs (what a picture!), christmas is over (yea!) and here comes the new year. Best to ya. Great photos, great site...keep the good times rolling. -Ducky

jook sing zai
I am so glad you spent Cristmas with dad. I am sure he appreciated that very much.
Do you like Indian food? I like all types of food, but among the indian dishes, I have to say Biryani with lamb or beef and shami kabab on the side has to be the best. Let me know if you want the recipe. I teach Indian cooking to the community here, once a month, and apparently, they like it and they return the next month asking for recipes to other dishes.
Hi Matt! welcome back to Xanga. Hope you had a great Christmas. Happy New Year and have a great Holiday!
