  • Money management

One of the things I want to focus on this year is managing
my money a lot better.  By that I mean
paying more attention to my modest little retirement fund, making sure I pay
down my debts as fast as possible and be a bit more conscious of how &
where I spend my money.  I’m not exactly
what triggered this.   Maybe it’s the
recent gyrations in the stock market.  RRSP
(Registered Retirement Savings Plan) season is just around the corner as
well.  The tax filing deadlines is also
not too far away too.  Or maybe I’m
finally listening to my bf who has been reminding me to pay more attention to
these things.  I don’t go crazy and spend
wildly (well, except maybe this Christmas).
My bf on the other hand is careful on where he spends his hard earned
    dollars.

Here’s an interesting contrast.  When I’m over at his place, I’ll be checking
the Best Buy and Future Shop flyers.  He’ll
be scouring the flyers for all the grocery stores.   He
knows what the average prices are for almost all items and wheter or not it’s a good deal.  On the other hand, I only know
that if bananas are 39 cents a pound, it’s a good deal.   Why do I know that?  Well, when we first went grocery shopping together,  he almost fainted when I started to pile
things into my shopping cart without checking the prices.  So his first shopping tip for me was: bananas
at 39 cents a pound is pretty good price.
It’s too bad my poor brain can only remember this, nothing else.

So little by little, I’m slowly getting my financial house
in order.  I don’t want to have a late
payment this year – period.  Those
interest payments add up and kill your credit rating.  All my bills, statements etc… are all over
the place.  One time, I showed up at his
place with all my receipts in shopping bags and shoe boxes.  He didn’t know whether to laugh, cry or slap
me silly.  This may take a bit of time for me to get all my stuff organized properly. He’s actually quite good with
    money.  He’s negotiated car deals,
mortgages & has even caught his bank making an error once!

After my bf took a look at my nest egg, he concluded that I’ve
got too much cash and not enough equities.
My bf told me what he recently purchase and to take advantage of the
recent drop in stock prices.  I made a
couple of trades now and so far so good.  My bf is actually quite good with money.  He’s negotiated car deals, mortgages &
has even caught his bank making an error once!

I try to do some simple things too.  I don’t buy tea at work anymore.  It’s $1.35 a cup.  So I buy tea bags and bring in my own thermos
cup.  I try to keep to just one cup of coffee
a day.  But there are days when I’ll need
a coffee in the afternoon so I don’t fall asleep on the keyboard.  I even watch how I drive.  When there’s no traffic say late at night, I
just coast along at the speed limit or just below it.  It’s a lot more economical this way than zipping
along at 110 kph or 120 kph.  And of
course, I only buy bananas at 39 cents a pound.

If I keep this up, I should be able to sleep better at night
    too.

     And now for more food…

The stock was a combination of chicken and pork bones.  The small meatballs are pork with finely chopped preserved salted
radish (I think that’s what it is) and shrimp.
    The veggies are Napa
cabbage.  It takes a bit of time to make
this but it was very good.  I added some
finely chopped ginger as well.  I have to find a way to make the pork more "smooth" or tender.  Maybe I should mince it by myself instead.

  • Eat nothing but bananas and you'll be sorted!

  • ryc: I actually think that there are indeed some statistics on gay relationships! I know a group in Ottawa who is doing research on this very topic...maybe I should look up their papers. hehe

Money, money, money...it is something that I start to think about more seriously recently. Sounds like you have a few useful money-saving tips!

  • uh...makes me feel like I need to marry someone to take care of money
I think I am just like you, if not worse with money management

  • bananas at 39cents? good tip! but bananas to me is like gas sometimes - i'll pay whatever the cost. i also really really really have to start saving money if i want to buy a condo. all this eating and splurging is no good, and all these trips i have planned are making me brankrupt! good luck!

  • Wow, I would like to get to know your bf lol. :)
Well I guess I am half of you and half of your bf. I keep track of my bills using excel so I know which bill is coming, when I need to pay my mortgage etc. So far so good, I only got once or twice late payment in 2007 coz I was so busy with work.
I don't keep track on the groceries, but I return/refund stuff that I don't use.

  • You must be feeling good.  You haven't mentioned anything about the sore throat.

You will be surprised how quickly your bank account will stare at you BLANKLY !  ( Pun intended. )  I always told my children, to understand the difference between want and need.  If you need anything, then you have to get it. If you want something, you have to ask yourself, if it is worth writing a check for, or charge it to the credit card.  Don't let the credit card companies love you. They are a treacherous lot !

Thank you for the comment about the grammer and the spelling mistakes of the seventh graders. I honestly think that these kids are on the internet and play the video games too much. This afternoon I went to pick up my grandson from the school, and I heard a fourth grader tell someone that he had lost twenty dollars last night gambling on the internet. I asked him if he was kidding, and he looked at me and said that he wasn't !  I wonder where his parents were. I am afriad of kids like these who influence other susceptible minds into doing the wrong things.

  • ryc: Thanks!! :)   It's good that you are saving money.  I am trying to save as much as I can for my place.

  • i try to watch my finances, budgeting and saving, but sometimes it's hard...  especially since i rarely ever see bananas being sold for 39 cents!

  • I look for coupons and shop at stores with specials. Right now bananas and strawberries are the best buy here so that is the fruit I eat. I think my diet is suffering but at least I have money to pay some of my bills. I take my tea bags to work too.
And a large travelers mug of coffee in the morning.

  • i believe i need a serious lecture about money management.

  • I hate that we have to be so organized about money.

That's why I'm going to marry rich.

Haha. That won't happen. But still. I'm going to be a poor college student next year, so that 39cent tip will definitely help! Thanks!

  • thanks for your words, matt.  you definately take interesting photos and mostly FOOD too.  that last one with the bbq ribs... MMmm.... yeah, give me some of that pls!  i'm into healthy eating but when it comes to bbq ribs, well, let's just say my knees get all weak... ;)

ps:  speaking of money management, i had faith in the stock market, but lately with economy problems everywhere and the stock market plummeted, it really hurt the small saving i have on stocks and foreign currency account at the bank.  now, i'm no einstein when it come to finance but i guess when we have reached above 30 yrs old, some kind of attempt in saving our money is a must.  if your bf is willing to spare advice or two, i'm all ears.  and don't worry, the bananas here in jakarta is dirt cheap!  ;p

  • You are very fiscally responsible...I am cheap about a lot of things, then I lose a lot of money on the stock market...go figure...

  • It seems like in every relatioship, even if both parties are pretty organized about money, there is still room for lots of friction.  Money and our relationship towards it, is so personal and so reflective of everything from our upbringing to our insecurities, that it is difficult to talk about it with a loved one without some judgement and defensiveness creeping in.

Hopefully, you and your boyfriend are finding ways to have these conversations constructively and with a lot of respect for each other's different fiscal values.  When you've become comfortable with these types of conversations, everything else is a piece of cake!

    Well, kind of...

  • money, money, money  I need to start thinking about retirement too and also watch my spending, maybe do some investment. hmmm...i'll ask my cousin for some advice. 39cents for banana, i don't really see that around these days. if i want to buy a house soon, I really need to watch how i spend money. seems like you're feeling better and the cold is gone. yay!

  • hehe u and ur boi are so sweet hehe.....^^

39 cents?  did you try the chinese market??? maybe it's even cheaper sometimes lol...

do you play ping pong with ur bf? LOL.... ^^

  • ryc: thanks, I'll take the 5 stars though, gosh, I'd much rather have a Michelin 3-star rating!

If it makes you feel any better, G also keeps his stuff in shoe boxes too
