  • Concert

My bf and I went to a concert on the weekend at Roy Thomson
    Hall
.  for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's Mozart Linz Symphony.   I can’t remember the last time I attended a
concert. It was a casual affair and the highlight of the evening for both of us
was a 17 year old pianist by the name of Ji-Yong.  Although I listen to classical music, I
really don’t know a lot about it nor would I consider myself knowledgeable.  But this young pianist absolutely stunned
me.  When this skinny kid came out on
stage, he looked about 14.  He didn’t
look nervous at all.  He didn’t just play
the piano, he somehow put his emotions and feelings into it.  I can’t really put this into words.  On soft notes, he would lean back and look
away with his fingers just barely caressing the keyboard.  When the passage became louder and more
forceful (what is the right terminology?), he would almost hunch over the
keyboards.  He was so animated and
expressive that it was a treat watching and listening to him.

It wasn’t a cheap date but this was our little way of
spoiling ourselves.  (ed. note:  please ignore Matt’s previous entry on fiscal
    responsibility).   While we were waiting
for the concert to start, I couldn’t help but think about my parents.  They loved classical music.  They would watch PBS over a steaming, hot cup of tea and enjoy a concert or the opera. After I started to work and paid off my student
loans, I would get tickets for them to watch the concerts.  They kept protesting about how expensive the
tickets must be.  I didn’t mind because
it was just a small gesture compared to what they did for me.  This continued for several years.  I don’t remember when it stopped.  It may have been when my mom started her
    dialysis.

For a brief moment during the concert,  I managed to resurrect some
old and fond memories.  The concert also created some new and special memories for me and my bf.

  • aww the kid looks cute :D
and hmm, do you think his performances are uploaded onto youtube? :]

  • What beautiful memories you shared and made....thank you for that Matt...it's so beautiful.......RYC: Yup, it's a little chilly    Keep warm... 'Til the Next

  • The colors of my xanga skin?  Heh, heh, heh...... >:)

anyway, I don't think I was able to express much emotion when I was 17...do you really think he has that much experience to instill into the music?

  • Nice, that is an awesome way to spend time together.

  • what a cute date. :3  One day I'll go to a concert with my boyfriend (if I ever find one) and watch cute skinny young asian boys play piano. haha.  And it's okie to splurge now and then.. I think it's a healthy way of living. ^_^

  • Your concert adventure brings back my fond memories of concert outings with my partner too.....What a nice gesture and good son you are!

  • haha I actually know the pianist. I met him during a music festival a few years ago. He beat me and 15 others in the concerto competition there. lol

And it's great knowing that people actually still go to classical music concerts!

  • That sounds like a great evening. By the way, I do play classical piano and did perform with symphony for an evening of Listz. One of the teacher I had was concerned with all the movements of the body to match the music. I did not know there was a class for that but I guess I found one.

  • aww...  i am looking forward to the day that i can actually give back to my parents like that.

ryc:  thanks; i'm doing ok.  it helps to have distractions, and right now there are some big things going on at work to distract me.  i'm actually more worried about how my mom is handling things right now.

  • Part of fiscal responsibility is learning when a small splurge will bring truly great enjoyment.  It sounds like the price of the tickets was an investment in your memories as a couple as well as a way to connect with a piece of your past.  Powerful things, both.

Nice to hear that your 17-year old prodigy isn't just technically proficient but has found the artistic side, too...

  • That is sooo romantic...I gotta find a bf soon...sigh...

  • Really good post Matt.  Your description of the musician is so fresh. You were probably thinking of the word crescendo when he was playing the piano with gusto?  You made such beautiful memories for yourself and for your bf with this outing.  And then in the midst of it all, to think fondly of your parents made my eyes misty. I am sure your parents were immensely proud of the gift of the concert tickets that you presented to them. You should be proud of yourself.

ryc: indian cooking. Thank you for the encouragement. I did post a recipe on my blog persuant to christao408's request. Hope it goes over ok. Have never done that before.

  • I heart Ji-Yong! :)

  • yes, ain't classical grand?! I used to have TSS subscription tickets back in my college days (daze?) .. back before they (finally) fixed the horrible acoustics in RTH

  • thank you for the compliment and the encouragement :D
    *huG*

  • ryc: I'm glad you enjoyed my foodie porn...In some situations, censorship is sorely needed!

  • I wish I could of gone.........sounds like a fun date......

Thanks for subbing........Tell me what kind of things you like to eat.

  • haha yeah
just that...i know that i cant get into that school
    and its really competitive
so the fact that he gets in
shows that he's the type that studies and works hard in school
    /nerd/
