  • Jaw breaker

I sat down with my dentist for a full checkup recently.  After the assistant took a bunch of xrays, he came in and lowered the seat.  We did the usual chit chat about the weather, work and women.  Well  ok, not women.   As I opened my mouth, my jaw made a loud *CLICK*.  I cringed.  He looked down at me bit more intently and said "hmm....".    My jaw had started to click recently.  It happens especially when I open wide when I'm eating or yawning  I wasn't sure what he was going to say.  What was he going to ask me?

What have you been sticking in your mouth?  Hmm... how would I answer that?  Uhmm... I have been eating a lot of corn on the cob?   Hmm...

Well, to make a long story short, he recommended that I get a mouth guard.  I have this tendency to clench my jaw all the time.  I do it all the time at work.  He actually mentioned this to me a few years ago when he noticed my molars starting to wear down.  But my work insurance didn't cover it.  It'll probably set me back around $300 to $400.  I think I'll do it.  It's a small price to pay.  As for the jaw, there's not much that can be done right now.  He said for most people, it just becomes an annoying sound.

So if you're in a restaurant and you hear this faint but noticeable clicking sound - look around, chances are that's me.
