Chicken soup for snow storm
We had another snowstorm over the weekend. I’m sick of this. While I don’t really mind the snow, it’s the
crazy drivers out there that drive me nuts.
Yesterday morning, I ventured out to the neighborhood supermarket. It was already snowing hard. The first intersection I came across is a four
way stop. The side streets in my area
are narrow with lots of parked cars. Something
told me to hold off a bit. Sure enough,
some idiot flew past stop sign and zoomed right across me. If I didn’t pause for that couple of seconds,
I would have seen what my airbag looks like.
Thanks to the guardian angels that ride with me all the time. The fire alarm went off in the building last night. It sounds like a dentist drill for
giants. The shrill piercing sound can
penetrate even those with hardened ear wax.
We’ve only had one minor kitchen fire in the condo and many false
alarms. I wasn’t going to take any
chances. The condo board always tells us
to go downstairs. Usually I just head
down, wait for the firemen check out the alarm and go back up stairs when it’s
all over. In the past month or so, I’ve
been thinking of putting together a bag of essentials. This would contain the things I absolutely
must save in case of a fire.Of course, I never got around to it. So when the alarm rang, I looked around – I saw
my laptop from work, some of my books, my camera and cellphone. I grabbed my cellphone, my camera and stuffed
it inside my knapsack. When I got
downstairs, I was the only person with a knapsack. Do any of you know what you would take with you in case a fire broke out? Most people stayed in their units. One resident even met her guest downstairs
and walked them up to her unit. Some
people had their pets with them. I met
one of the residents here who’s also real estate agent. We chatted for a while about our
building. Just for fun, I asked how much the penthouse
units were going for. He said the last
one sold for over a million dollars. He
told me that penthouses can go for about $200 sq ft depending on the location
and the building. I guess I won’t be purchasing one of those
units in my lifetime. After the firemen gave us the green light, I went back
upstairs and finished cooking. I made
some chicken soup and beef stew (not pictured) for tonight’s dinner. Here’s the chicken soup. I used a whole chicken. I also found another chicken carcass from a roast chicken that I had sometime ago in the freezer. I threw that in too along with the usual spices and a couple of bay leaves.

chicken soup is perrrrrfect on a day like today! something warm and comforting when it's cold and bright outside
... hmmm as to what I'd take ... my porn collection... it's priceless! Don't you have a button you can push to silence the alarm in your unit?...
@AppsScraps - your porn colection? HAHAHAHA. There aren't any buttons to silence the units. In fact, they check the fire alarms twice a year in our units. It's a bit of a pain but I guess that's condo life.
That soup looks awesome. I have yet to hear a fire alarm here. I have neighbors from four different continents around me (Pakistanis below, Nigerians next door, Salvadoreans across the hall, and this weird German guy behind me). so there is always a unique smell when someone is cooking. heh. That's Houston.
I made those kind of chicken soup before
but I boil it so much when I stir, the chicken just fell off the bone and became muscle fiber strands...
It was quite warm here in Southern California today, 75 F in the afternoon, and I had to turn on the car a/c to cool down for a short time. People drive crazy and distracted here also, I also pay special attention at lights and stop signs. I have seen people running red lights and stop signs many times. Glad you drove defensively and safe!
Your chicken soup looks very yummy! I have never made chicken soup with carrot and celery before. I think I wil give it a try tomorrow. I like chicken soup both in cold and warm weather.
Mmmm that chicken soup looks good! I'm glad the fire was a false alarm. I'd grab my wallet, passport, keys, laptop, work papers and sketchbook. If I was living with anyone I'd grab them too.

Wow, a really authentic soup. For me, I will be lazy to use "real chicken" for the soup base, will just use canned chicken broth instead =P
Funny, I made chicken soup yesterday too. Although yours looks much better. I do have my essential papers in a so called fireproof box but never thought about an emergency pack - which I think is a great idea and a work in progress now.
mm... chicken soup sounds delicious! it is still too cold outside.. when's spring?!
i'm not sure what i would grab if the fire alarm went off... there are too many things i'd like to save but probably wouldn't be able to, like my desktop computer!
yeah yum that chicken soup looks good.
if there was a fire guess first thing would be family and dogs. then.... i have no idea actually. i guess things that i can't ever get again which would be photo albums, the computer as it stores photos, and my many diary books that i have.
@kunhuo42 - i know how to resolve this! buy an external hard drive and back up all your info into it. it's such an easy thing to do and it's a good for piece of mind (if your computer crashes and you need back up, or you need to quickly run out of the house because of fire)
@twistedoff - That's exactly what I did. I have two, in fact. If there's a fire or disaster or another coup, the passport and the external hard drive are all I need. And a camera, so I can document the drama for a blog entry.
And the soup looks lovely, I must say.
Ooo yuum! Old chicken makes the best soup!
@christao408 - "... and a camera, so I can document the drama for a blog entry." HAHAHAHA
@twistedoff - I think I'll do this. Thanks!
@zozoyork - I use canned broth / stock too when I don't have time. But I find it a bit too salty sometimes.

I have a flashlight by the bed and in the kitchen. Down here lights out are a weekly event!
I had Campbells soup for dinner.
I need a bf. LOL
Your soup reminds me of those my family cooked back in Hong Kong! Such "comfort foood"!
I would definitely be grabbing my laptop, external hard drive, passport and box of Felix keepsakes.
The soup looks dericious (yes that's my new word).
That looks soooooo good right about now, we have a rain storm right now and I feel your pain...
yeah, i do know what to take with me in case a fire broke out... my photo albums. they are priceless life memories. you can't buy them anywhere. so when i get real old and forgetful, i can always rely on my photo albums to remind me what the past was like and all of the people that came in my life looked like.
