  • Triggering memories

Memories can be funny sometimes.  It gets triggered when you least expect
    it.

I was cutting tofu the other day for my soup.  Normally I just put it on a plate or the
cutting board and get on with the job.
But the other day, I held it on my hand and diced it with a knife.  The tofu is soft so I knew I wouldn’t cut
myself.  In a flash, I was back in my mom’s
kitchen in Manila.  She was holding the tofu in one hand and
cutting it with the other.  I asked her “Won’t
you cut your hands?”  She grinned and
said “No, watch carefully.  You just stop
when the knife reaches your hand.  Just do it slowly and carefully.”  She
lowered her hands and let me watch closely as she sliced the tofu.
I turned my head to make sure I saw the knife reaching her hands.  She slowly retracted the knife from the tofu and
continued cutting it cross wise to make small cubes.

I paused and smiled as the memories came back.

My bf called me tonight to watch a show on CBC.  It was a documentary called “Tailor Made”.  I’ve seen parts of this before so it was good
to take a break from work and watch the parts I haven’t seen.  It’s a pretty good documentary.  You can also read a bit more about this last
tailor (custom made suits) in Vancouver’s Chinatown here.

While watching it, I remembered the very first suit I got to
look for a job.  It was from a small store in
my neighborhood.  I knew one of the guys
who worked there part time.  I went in
and explained to the owner that I was looking for a suit for job interviews and
hopefully to wear when I got a job.  I also didn’t have a lot of money so I wanted something affordable.

He spent a lot of time with me and steered me towards a wool
navy blue suit.  It wasn’t the most
expensive suit – sort of a middle of the line.
But he explained that it was flexible.
He showed me the many different colors of shirts and patterns of shirts
that would go well with the suit.  He
also picked out a tie for me – burgundy rep tie with stripes running diagonally
across.  One of the colors of the stripes
was the same blue of the suit.  He walked me to the window and explained that sunlight is the best light to look at colors of clothing.  The artificial lights can sometimes give a different shade of color.  He
showed how the color of the tie would complement the suit and how the blue stripe would also pick up (match) color of the suit.  This would help pull it together.  When I came back a week or so
afterwards to pick it up, he asked if I knew the proper way to sit down.  I shrugged and just sat down on a chair.  He then told me to watch as he sat down.  He gently pulled his pants up (perhaps an inch or so) as he was sitting down. He explained that by doing so, it reduces a lot of the stress in the fabric by the rear (the bum).

Well, back to work.  I just remembered that I have to finish reading this document for tomorrow.

  • I’ve known many a time when memories pop into my head unexpectedly. Some make me laugh out loud while others make me want to expunge them from my mind. Memories are funny that way sometimes.

  • wow…wait…you are one of the 3rd or 4th generation immigrants?

I can’t imagine the 1st or 1.5 generations shopping at those places

  • @gyjcwang - uhm.. no, the store I got wasn’t the store in the documentary.  It was off the rack (I don’t have anything custom made).  I think it was on sale too.  You’re looking at 1st generation immigrant here.

  • That was a sweet memory of your mum.

What a tailor, he explained everything–I think I’ll pull my pants up like how he said next time I’m wearing a suit :)  I suppose that’s a good way to get customers. I still need to get a good work suit. Funny, how you ended this post abruptly.

  • what a nice experience from buying your first suit. sounds like an interesting documentary.

  • “These are the moments, these are the times. Let’s make the best out of our lives!”

  • Hmmm, i didn’t know that about sitting down. I mean, I already do that every now and then when I’m wearing slacks — but now I’ll make sure to do so =]

  • haha i could just imagine you tilting your head watching your mom cut tofu

    =]

but i never really thought about doing that. hmm =]

and the owner seemed like a very nice man =]

hmm you should show me the proper way to sit :D

  • I do remember my first suit. IT had to be altered so there was a lot of work and the tailor took time to show me the same things about keeping the suit nice and neat. Yep it was dark blue. Boy does that go back!!!

  • I look u-g-l-y, no pics of me clubbing! =P

  • I can’t remember ever having had anything custom made for me except for sweater vests knit by my mother.  It is difficult for me to conceive of business owners being so solicitous.  It’s a great memory to have.

  • how sweet to remember people so fondly..

i often have memories spring into my head from

what may appear to be no where. Especially ones of

my mother… she’s been gone more then twelve years

and yet her memory visits me often. I’m thankful for that.

    be well

  • Awww, I wish I had a bf who phoned me to watch shows on TV. Yes, my comment doesn’t have much to do with the memories part of your post

  • yeah i cut tofu on my left hand

  • i still cut tofu on the cutting board…  i’m clumsy enough that i’m sure i would accidentally cut myself if i tried to hold the tofu.

hmm…  i am still wearing the first and only suit i’ve ever owned.  i hope it lasts me a long time…  i had a hard time finding one that was actually my size!

  • I love having fond memories pop in my head out of nowhere. I randomly have these moments while I play the piano, even though the music has no associations at all with the events in the memories.

  • hehe, I’m sorry but English translations are available for the captions only for now…
and I don’t have any plans to extend that to the stuff that I wrote.

    I hope you’ll enjoy the photos nonetheless~ =]

  • you just got me thinking about the times when i would watch my mom cook and try to help out in ways that i could, which usually meant just washing things. now i feel old. great.

  • my first suit (also for a job interview) was also a dark blue suit, but the seller wasn’t as helpful as yours.

  • I love memories like that….work never ends does it….hope you have a great week… ‘Til The Next

  • thanks for participating in the “Guess tomatoboi’s drink” contest though!

    here’s your participation prize~
    *HUG*

  • Memories….*sigh*

I remember where I got my first suit, it’s from a small boutique as well, since you’ll get more attention and better service than those big department stores, right?

  • i always cringed when my mom would cut tofu in her hands too!  Moms are amazing.
