  • Sundays are usually soup days for me.   I usually start making the stock before lunch so that I can get it all done in time for dinner at my dad's place.  Even if we eat out, I always try to bring
some home made soup for him so he has something during the week.  My mom used to make soup almost every
day.  Sometimes she would make a big
batch of soup and freeze them for those very busy days.

I have a few standard soups that I make and I rotate them so that dad doesn't get bored. Whenever I need new ideas or suggestion, my
bf will provide them. He’s a strong
believer in soup as a tonic.  When he
shops, sometimes he’ll buy certain things for his soups that will aid and / or
address certain ailments.  My mom was
like that too.  One of the soups she made
was from the silkie (silken?) chicken (that black skin chicken).  She would put some “wai san” (a type of yam), “gai jee”
(dried goji berries - note:  I seen them also referred to as wolfberries, I don't know if there is a difference), dried longan and few other things.  The soup has a sweet taste and it’s very
    different than other soups.

Here’s a soup that I made recently.  The stock is from pork bones, chicken legs, dried scallops and ginger.  This was the first time I've tried making the soup with dried bak choy.  It wasn't that great though.  My dad
couldn’t chew the bak choy even after they have been soaked in water and then simmered
in the stock for a couple of hours.
There was also still a bit of sand which was irritating.  I had washed and washed those things until they
were crumbling.  Now I remember why mom
    didn’t like making this soup.

The remnants of the pork bones, chicken feet, dried scallop and ginger that went into the stock.

The soup - anyone tried this before?  This is made with dried bak choy.  What's your favorite soup?

I also try to hit the local farmers market on Sundays.  It's a small one - about a dozen stalls.  They even have cheese, meats, buffalo meats, eggs and honey too.   This was one of the cherry muffins I picked up - it's packed with cherries.

This was part of a recent purchase from the market.  I'm going to try and eat more fruits and veggies this summer.

They usually have entertainers and sometimes free massage.

    Some of the stalls...

This stall also sells several types of tomatoes.

I picked up some sheep cheese here.  It's soft, white, unripened and comes in several flavors.

    They also sell flowers too.

  • Yes! That soup is my mom's specialty! I crave for it whenever I come back for the holidays. It's so delicious and savory.

  • ohh~ tomatoes! hehehehehehehe

    =]

  • yup...i had that soup when i was younger, but not often. i like watercress soup the most.

  • Those pics remind me of Food Network. Those chefs say going to the market is the best way to get new ideas for recipes.

What I found cute was when you mentioned your bf in helping you make soup? It is cute how he would give you some ideas.

  • i like having soup at night. late night. gotta keep it low carb! ha.

  • I so can't wait to hit up that LV Farmers Market!!  And I will miss my dad's soup when I move out.  Will you bring me some of yours? ^_^;

And RYC I did "ok" on the exam.  I''m pretty confident that I got an A but if you want if you want to start a pool I don't mind the extra funds for my schooling.  LOL.

  • Fresh fruits and veggies are my favorite this time of year! Love hte muffin too. I seldom make soup but do a large pot of soup and then freeze in pint containers. By the way the berries you mention in the soup are for bone and arthritis.

  • mm...  that farmers market looks great.  i make a few soups, although not as many as the ones my mom makes -- pigs feet/chicken feet soup, oxtail soup, seaweed soup, winter melon soup, jook, portuguese bean soup...  and i'm sure there are more that i can't think of right now.

  • These stupid cherries were $8.99/lb here the other day!  Crazy!

  • I have tried to make that soup, countless times, simmer simmer simmer till its all falling apart. I can never get the flavor right! the Dried bok choy with sand though, i havn't had that issue. keep the soups coming!!

  • Matt I love soups. I could survive on them. I am so glad that you take soup for your dad regularly.

Hey. I didn't see any mangos in any of the stalls.

  • @trendyhedonism - really?  You should get the recipe so that you can make it for yourself during those cold wintry nights.

@tomatoboi - hahaha, I had a funny feeling that you would notice!

@icebladz - I like watercress soup too.  That's one of the soups I make.

    @mmmagination - yeah, he's good that way.

    @JonasApproved - you smart guy!

@brooklyn2028 - an A!  way to go.  Hmm... I better wear a disguise in case I run into you at the market next year.  hahahaha

@Fatcat723 - the muffin was very good.  Until recently I had no idea those goji berries were so good for you.  To think that I've been eating it since I was a kid.  Some of these old recipes have a lot of good in them.

@kunhuo42 - I've never tried pigs feet, oxtail (my mom used to make this with veggies from the garden) or Portuguese bean soup.  Now you've given me a few ideas.

@CareyGLY - give me $8.99 and I'll send you a pic of the cherries.

@NanYu - hey... long time no see!    Ah... I remember you talking about soup a long time ago (on my old blog).

@ZSA_MD - mangoes?  hee hee... these are all locally grown products.  I wish we had those mangoes you had written about.  Oh man, my mouth is starting to water just imagining how sweet and fragrant they must be.

  • I remembered soup appeared regularly on our family menu as well....dried bak choy, wai san, black skin chicken, gay jee....how I missed them all!!  Matt, you must be a good soup maker and a good son, cooking soup for the family!!

ryc: lucky that I caught a glimpse of that humming birdie!! LOL

  • Reminded me of St.Lawrence market

  • i've always wondered if yams and sweet potatoes are the same thing!

  • Matt, do you use leftover bones for your stock or actually buy scraps from the butcher?

Nice photos of the farmers' market.

  • @christao408 - the soup bones is from a Chinese supermarket.  If it's chicken, I buy chicken bones but I also buy chicken thighs and drumsticks too.

  • @curry69curry - well, my brother also makes soups too.  My sister makes western style soups though (also doesn't use chopsticks at a Chinese restaurant but that's for another entry).

  • hahaha i am a rabbit... love carrots so much =p

  • yes, i've had the soup few times.  the fruits at the market look awesome!!  too bad we don't grow them here in indonesia ;(

  • Is bak choy a meat? Is that the same as bok choi? Do they just spell it differently here? The farmer's market looks amazing. We used to go in Dallas but it wasn't nearly so big as that one. That is really cool.

  • @masecam - hi, it's the same as bok choy (I just spell it differently).

This is one of the several small farmers market in the city.  They take up part of a small parking lot but it gets lots of traffic from the condos and townhouses in the area.
