  • Thomas and Friends stump Matt

A few weeks ago, my bf called me and asked "Guess what I'm watching?"  I responded with my usual "Uhm... what?"

"I'm watching Treehouse."  It took me a while to remember what that was.  In a short time, I could hear laughter and squealing in the background.  I chuckled because it reminded me of the last time I thought I knew something about kids shows.  One of my bf's nephews loves trains.  He was enamored with that show "Thomas and Friends".  Sometimes when they are watching TV, I'll glance at the TV every so often to see what what they're watching.  I draw the line at Barney though.  It takes every ounce of self control for me not to swear when that purple dinosaur starts to sing.  So after watching a few episodes of Thomas the train.  I thought I knew what that show was.

One day when they were playing in the living room, I saw that train engine with the face and I said - "Oh look, it's Thomas the train."

"No Uncle Matt!"  they shouted - "That's not Thomas, that's (insert the other train's name)."

I gave them my usual dumb look - "Huh?"  Again, they told me who that was.  One of the parents told me that each train has their own names.  Of course I said "There's more than one train?"   .... sheesh....

After that, I did some research and there's a ton of these trains with names!  I thought I would be able to memorize them but after a few minutes I gave up.  I'm sorry - but they all look alike.

Here are the mug shots of just a few of these trains.
    (pictures are from thomasandfriends.com)
    Thomas:

    Edward: (who looks like Thomas)

Gordon: (who also looks like Thomas!)

    There are even twins!

Last night the kids were over at my bf's house for dinner.  The youngest one who's just over 2 years old is just starting to talk.  He can't say my name yet.  He sort of grunts "unh mai" for Uncle Matt.  When I take his picture, he will come over and look at the image on the back of the camera.  I'll ask him who it is and he'll smile and point at himself.  I thought that was cute.  The oldest nephew asked me to check his homework last night.  I thought that was cute too.

Sigh... it must be fun being a parent.  Aside from watching kids TV shows....

  • @tomatoboi - if these trains commit a crime, I won't be able to pick them out in a police line up.

@mmmagination - you know me and kids.... hahahaha

    @christao408 - I swear, I was stunned when I found out.

  • ... heavens, I am so totally with Aaron on this one

  • Looks like someone is well on their way towards parenthood :D

  • Matt, you have not lived the life if you have not watched the fifteen ot twenty DVDs about Thomas and his friends. You need to come here and take a look at my grandson Davis' collection. Jeez! The tracks and the twenty or more engines and the haunted tunnels and the island of Sodor...all baffle me no end.  Welcome to the world of children.

  • @Fatcat723 - you and me both!

@kunhuo42 - well, I did sneak out when it came to diaper changing time.  I guess I shouldn't do that.

@ZSA_MD - 15 to 20 DVDs!  OMG!  No wonder you blog to keep your sanity!

@trendyhedonism - hahaha... you know me and babies.

    @AppsScraps - champagne and diapers!

  • I hated Barney even when I was a kid. Something about him just made me uneasy. Wayyy too happy and prancy.

And that's hella funny. All the trains ARE the same except for the eyebrows...

tell them to watch pokemon... it'll bring the asian side of them out (andifthey're not asian...they aught to be) =]

  • ROTFL!!  That is too cute... you should try backyardigans...they're good too   'Til The Next

  • Are you serious? Those DVD's are only in my home... he has about ten more in his home. We have a set of tracks and trains here and he has almost twice that number in his home. His dad says that there is no room in the house for one more Thomas the Tank engine. Yesterday he showed me the new Thomas Video tank... fat and squat... that gets connected to the tv and he gets to watch the movies. Dang! kids here have all the fun. We used to run around in the hot Indian sun like wild banshees.

Did you see his picture with the thomas costume which I had posted along with my baby pictures last week?

  • My cousin's kids LOVED Thomas.

Thankfully they've grown out of that stage

...and on to Yuugi Oh?! NO!!!!

  • @Devilzgaysianboi - I think Barney is a bit too weird for me... I can't describe it.

@GracePrince - backyardigans?  I'll have to google that to figure out what they are.

@ZSA_MD - yes I saw the costume and also saw the DVD on "currently watching" on one of your recent entries.  I had no idea you have been "exposed" to so many of these already.

@reallifedemo - I don't understand those Pokemon stuff either.  lol...

  • @ElusiveWords - Lol. Pokemon was the show of my youth (I was in 4th or 5th grade when the original series came out) and I'm a big manga bug, so I understand that a little more. But Yuugi Oh???? That's just a wannabe anime.

  • I remember I also loved watching this cartoon when I was young in hk.  haha

  • @dolphin27 - really? lol...  I thought this show is relatively new.  (I'm not saying you're old).

  • ha, ha... yeah, they all look the same to me too.  don't know how parents can stand watching those type of shows again and again.  i'd go mad!

  • @rudyhou - hahaha... I think parents have selective hearing and vision.  It helps maintain their sanity.
