  • What's up doc?

It was time for my annual checkup.  I had put it off for a bit so it was actually over 12 months.  This reminds me of I line I heard once.  "We have our quarterly meetings 3 times a year."   Before we started, I  gave my doctor an update on what I found out on my
dad’s family.  She asked a lot of
questions and made careful notes in my file.
     I was then poked, prodded,
examined, and listened to.  I felt like a
piece of fruit (no pun intended) or a piece of meat.  She drew the line at sniffing at me
though.  I am of course ticklish so I squirmed
as she poked me here and there.  As she started
to check down there (where the treasure trail leads), we continued to make
small talk.  Yes, “she”.  I’ve mostly gotten over it some time ago
already.  But it’s still awkward.  Most of the chit chat was around
    cooking.

I mean, what else would you talk about when she’s examining
    uhm… your stuff?

    a)      “Hey
doc, what kind of lube do you use for your patients?”

    b)      “You
    have cold hands!”

    c)      “You
okay if I write about this in my blog?”

    d)      “I
glad you’ve done this a million times.  I
had this one doctor who was so nervous, his hands kept shaking.”

Before I left, she noted a weight gain since my last checkup
and didn’t say anything else.  She knows
I got the message.  So I’ll have to find
more time and prioritize working out into my schedule and to continue to eat better.

With that in mind, this is a simple vegetable soup.  The stock is chicken (not homemade though),
with carrots, onions, corn (I sliced out the corn and put the cob in the stock
to give it a bit more flavor), Napa cabbage, tofu and home made pork meatballs
from lean ground pork with a splash of sesame seed oil.  It was quick to make and filling.

  • haha...that was good. I don't know if its better to chit chat or not say anything when you doing the exam thing.

  • I love Chinese soup.  So delicious and healthy.

  • Quite a colorful soup.

  • you should spice up the title as : A date with my doctor ; )

  • I had a check-up also today!  Glad she is the dentist and she only checked my kisser instead of "down there".   I think you reacted much better than I would have.

  • So your health is all good?

  • Hey Matt.... I'm learning to take good food pictures. Your food pix always look so good .... Tips?

  • are those... brains???
    little animals' brains!

  • hmm... i haven't had a check-up with the doctor in a while.  i also need to schedule a dentist appointment soon...  just haven't gotten around to doing either.

hahahah  quarterly meetings three times a year?  that sounds like douglas adam's trilogy of 5 novels!

  • MM My primary care physician is a man. I am not sure how I would react to a female. Things might just be very short.
Sounds like are well which is most important!

  • ...depending on what the hands examined, there's one examination that happens to males more regularly as they move through the life cycle.  I'm always amused by it--not the exam itself, but rather the name for the exam.  It's one of the few things in life today that has a _very_ different meaning of "digital".

(and if you've not had it, it's NOT electronic!)

    Happy Friday, Matt.

  • hehe...i need to find a male doctor.

  • Glad to hear you're in good health.  Was thinking this should be a featured question, to have people write about their latest check-up.  Could be a good tool to promote everyone going for an annual physical.

Speaking of sniffing, did you know that smelling the patient's breath is actually an effective way of identifying several major diseases?  I don't remember the specifics, but read that, for example, a very sweet smell is indicative of kidney problems.  Interesting, huh?

  • No pics of the exam?  LOL

  • Oh...you have a female family doctor.  For me, I would feel uncomfortable or embarrassed.  I think I need to have a checkup as well...haven't had one for quite some time.

  • You put it all in perspective Matt. I used to wonder what men were thinking whenever I examined them. Now I know. You are a funny guy.

Chris is right about the fruity breath. Diabetic patients with kidney failures will have a breath like that; and don' t forget the reek of alcohol from the patient's mouth; how about the smell of cigarette smoke!! An instant migraine for me. Another serious malady would be a bad odour from the mouth signifying cancer of the pancreas or stomach.

    I am grossing you out aren't I?

  • i just had my check up too... i really must hit the gym on

more of a regular schedule. That, and I need to eat better too.

Be well mate, I hope the weekend has been kind

  • heavens thanks for the reminder ... I must make an appointment for my annual

  • ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!  Omg that's too funny!  I really like your thought process.... and your food pics... Now I'm going to eat some cereal!  'Til The Next

  • @macphoto - well, I've known her for a while so it was easy for me to chit chat.

@brooklyn2028 - yeah... I picked up a book on Chinese soups some time ago, I still have lots to learn.

@LeggoMyBurrito - thank you for the comment and for dropping in.

@stevew918 - I trust your kisser is fine?

@mmmagination - aside from the need to lose some weight, everything else is ok.

@tomatoboi - it was a pork meatball ... hahaha..  it does look like some sort of brain.

@kunhuo42 - I would have thought you would be a regular at this.  hee hee...

@Fatcat723 - I was very relieved that all is well.

@mbpasadena - trust me, I've had it.  ugh...

    @ABSOLUTmichael - after a while, I've found it didn't make a difference to me.

    @CareyGLY - HAHAHAHA!  You're crazy.

@dolphin27 - ask your friends for a recommendation, make an appointment with them and interview them to see who you like.

@christao408 - I've heard about the breath being an indication of health.

@ZSA_MD - I was wondering what your reaction would have been.  I have heard of the breath being an indication of illness.  No - you're not grossing me out.  Sometimes I watch medical documentaries while I'm eating.

@bleuzeus - that sounds like the same advice...uhm, order that I got.

@AppsScraps - hope you made the appointment.

@GracePrince - I try to see humor in everything.

  • ha, ha... i'm sorry, i know you're probably still feel tormented by the experience but i just find it too funny :)
