  • lazy food entry

I made some chicken rice soup for my dad and kept some for myself.  This is simple, just brown some chicken, add some veggies to deglaze the pan and simmer them for a few hours.  I threw in some rice near the end so it won't be too soft.

add onions, carrots and celery, throw in a bay leaf and I also added a few slices of ginger

in a few hours... (actually, I strain the veggies out and put new ones in)
the older ones have no more flavor.  But sometimes I just leave them in
because I don't want to waste them either.

I also made some shrimp chow mein today

    oh yeah... the quiz

    1.  True – I did it once.  My face was so red from the embarrassment that it matched the suit.

    2.  True – I sat there for about 20 minutes while being lectured by two cops on safe driving.  I took a turn too quickly and skidded across a lane.  Won’t you know it, the cops were nearby and pulled me over.  Luckily I didn’t get a ticket.

    3.  True – these are gifts.  I took them back to my condo when I was cleaning out my dad's basement.  I’ve never used the knife for hunting.  The axe was useful on several camping trips.  It was handy for chopping up firewood.  But the campsite also sold wood that was nicely chopped up.  I got some strange looks when I carried it up the elevator.

    4.  False – I cannot get past the smell of durian.

    5.  False – I can handle moderately spicy but not hot and spicy.  My bf on the other hand has chili sauce with a lot of food.

  • I got the safe driving lecture but I was standing outside the car! Love the food- come cook for me!!

  • wow, that shrimp chow mein looks good!  i haven't had noodles in a long time.

i cooked a turkey yesterday!  i forgot to take a picture of it before we dug in though, and now it's all dismembered and stuffed into containers in my fridge.  oh well...

  • I got 3 questions right! 60% is not that bad~ hahaha

  • I love chow mein, and your chicken soup! No tickets!! Must be wearing your lucky colour, Lucky Mattie!!

  • Ah, so you do pull the vegetables out sometimes.  I always feel guilty when doing that after making a stock.

  • 1 out of 4 ain't bad!

  • I got 3/5 right.. not bad :D

You are always my inspirations in terms of making food! Now I can steal a few ideas from yours :P

  • Oh yum, I want the chow mein!!!

  • Three out of five ain't too sloppy i say. yeah the smell of durian... i forgot about that.

Love the soup, and the shrimp chowmein. so when are you coming here? I want you to teach me some of that wonderful cuisine. Love and hugs.

  • My BF also loves Durian , I always warn him not to kiss me after having it....

  • @Fatcat723 - do you have a wok?

@kunhuo42 - you really need to put a yellow sticky note in your fridge "Aaron, take food pics for Xanga!"

@tomatoboi - that's better than what I got in school.

@curry69curry - I think my dad would have whooped me - it was his car I was driving.

@christao408 - I still try a few just to make sure they have no more taste.  I don't think there are any more nutrients left after several hours of simmering.

    @CareyGLY - tsk tsk...

@bennykan - this is probably the first time you got 60% in any test!

@brooklyn2028 - the picture looked better than it tasted.

@ZSA_MD - we'll be in the kitchen all day if I show up at your place... non stop cooking and eating.

@agmhkg - hahaha... my bf loves durian too.

  • I will buy a new one for you --you can help pick it out!

  • HAHAHA! Ignore my question on the other post. I found the answer myself

  • Strain the veggie and put in new ones?!
    That sounds so...strenuous...

    I have a question
Boyfriend was making beef stew, the ingredients are:
beef, potato, celery, carrots, small tapioca

Now the last time it was really nice, sweet, and gooey

This time he added more potatoes and celeries and the whole thing was quite sour...
What could have thrown off the flavor?
BTW, potatoes are quite hard this time too

He cooked both times in crock pot

  • @Wangium - odd... I have never had anything sour in my stews before.  I taste and or smell things as I'm preparing them.  The only thing I can think of was something bad (maybe the liquid he added - wine / beer / stock ?) .  If you like your veggies less gooey, add them in later in the cooking process.

  • I didn't know beef stock could make thing sour...

  • @Wangium - I meant if the stock, wine or beer had gone bad before he added it to the stew.
