  • Walking in the Rain

I went out for a walk last night.  It was a cool evening although the wind was starting to pick up when I headed out the door.  Within a couple of minutes, a couple of rain drops started to fall.  I passed by an Italian restaurant.  A table of 3 was lingering over coffee and conversation.   They didn’t look at me when I walked past them.   I passed another store that recently opened and saw some very expensive light fixtures.  The Starbucks still had people lounging by the window.  I never know how people can drink coffee so late at night and still sleep.

It started to rain gently.  I pulled my hood over my head and zipped up my jacket.  But it soon started to pour.  I picked up my pace a bit and continued walking.  I had on a Goretex outer jacket so I knew I wasn’t going to get wet inside.  The jacket though was soaked as the shell doesn’t repel water that well anymore.  I passed by 2 people curled up under an awning with their sleeping bags.  Their paper wall cartoon boxes were soaked and the wind slowly swept it down the sidewalk.  Their belongings were in a shopping cart and drenched.  I knew that in a few minutes, I would be in a nice, warm and dry place.

The front of my pants was getting soaked and I could feel it slowly sliding down.  As I turned the corner and headed back home, the wind was on my back.  I could see the waves of rain coming down hard.  The patterns on the street and sidewalk was actually quite mesmerizing.  My running shoes were now soaked.  The wind made sure the back side of my pants were also evenly soaked.  I wasn’t cold though.  I actually enjoyed the experience.

It was refreshing and in a way cleansing.  I felt alive.  The sound of the rain was soothing and peaceful.  Whatever stress I had was washed away.  As I went inside my condo, the security guard grinned when she saw me soaking wet.  I smiled back.  I could have done the song and dance routine from Singing in the Rain.

  • while you're walking in the rain, we're surprised having another snow in Vancouver on Sun and Mon while everyone expecting Spring....frankly we didn't rain much this winter but several times of snowing  including the 2 snowstorms in DEC What a Winter..

  • Sounds like you enjoyed 'dancing' (maybe singing) in the rain, just like Gene Kelly? LOL

  • I live on the northern border of the city, it's understandable that it's a couple degrees lower compared to downtown Toronto~ haha

  • I like rain a lot too
Although shouldn't it be snowing at this time of the year in Toronto?

  • Love the tone of ur writing =)
Ahh...i hate rain coz i dunt like being wet =P

  • Well, a little rain in our life is very much welcome. A reminder that not every day is a sunny day.

  • Had you done the "Singing in the Rain" number, you would have earned at least three or four points for your gay card.

  • I like the rain too, but isn't it too cold out right now to be walking in the rain?
as for coffee at night, you get used to it after a while, its always nice to catch up with friends in a coffee shop.

  • Walking in the rain is nice sometimes, but not when it's pouring, and you're about to head to meet with someone. One time, my car breaks down, well, one of the tires popped, and I had no phone, no umbrella. I ran through the pouring rain dressed in a wrapped dress, which I tried to hold down because it was quite windy that day and it was flying in all directions. I was also wearing heels and so my feet were drenched, and each time I took a step I could hear it squishing. =__=

  • I love the rain! Of course here it is warm most of the time. Rains for a short time and then the sun. Seems the rain cleans the air and refreshes the plants. I end up wet at the farthest point of the walk and dry from walking in the sun back home.

  • we can use some rain in California.  come sing for us, hehe.  At least it is not snowing.

  • mmm...  the rain is nice.  i don't like walking in it much (especially with my glasses on), but i do like running in it (as long as it's not too cold).

  • I love rain! I was born and brought up in a tropical region where it rained almost throughout the year. I miss them dearly.

  • someone had great sex last night...

no, that was beautifully written. i could almost smell the wet cement.

another thing, you said "2 people" when you referred to the homeless people. i found that cool and made me realise they are just like you and me.

    enjoyed reading this

  • @agmhkg - I think Mother Nature wanted to give Vancouverites a bit of variety this winter.

@curry69curry - I don't sing or dance (well - except in private).  hahaha

@tomatoboi - yeah, I heard the northern part of the city got a bunch of snow.

@Wangium - yes it does.  It was really warm last Friday (17).  I live right at the downtown core and it's usually a bit warmer than the northern part of the city.

@zozoyork - thank you.  You hate rain ... that's why there's lots of snow for you this winter.

@Norcani - yeah... I like the variety in our seasons.  I also remind myself that the earth needs rain too.

@christao408 - LOL... believe it or not, I looked up the Gene Kelly song in YouTube and it was playing in the background as I was updating my Xanga.

@icebladz - it was above freezing, maybe 5C.  I also had a fleece jacket underneath my shell plus another shirt and tshirt.  With the hood on, I was nice and toasty.

@ms_ToMaTo - oh no... had that happened to me (not the part about wearing heels of course), I would have change my ending to "cursing in the rain".

@Fatcat723 - wow... those are really short showers.  Or you wear fabrics that dry quickly.  Or you walk very, very slow.

@stevew918 - I tried to send you some rain when you visited Calgary...

@kunhuo42 - you know, I actually thought about running in the rain and what it must like to run cross country.  I think it might have triggered a memory of one of your entries or comments about running.

@Dezinerdreams - I remember the sound of rain when it fell on those corrugated metal sheet roof.  It was very loud and it made the storms outside sound even stronger.

@stepaside_loser - thank you, I'm glad you liked it.  I felt guilty as I walked past those 2.  I only saw them briefly and didn't want to stare.

  • I love this post Matt. I love walking in the rain. It is so exhilerating for me. I have posted some blogs about that in the past.

  • @ZSA_MD - yeah... and walking in the beach.  I think walking on the beach in a rainstorm is a blast.

  • Nice post. I am personally not a big fan of the rain though, hehe.

  • you should try swimming in the rain sometime.  it's highly recommended.  i do it often.
