  • An Evening Walk and How I'm Perceived

I went out for a walk the other night.  It was a cool evening and I needed some fresh air.  There were lots of people out.  Some stores were closing but a lot of restaurants and bars were busy.  It’s fascinating for people watching.

I passed by a small gallery that had a DJ spinning records.  I could hear the tune from across the street.  It was a song from the 60’s – The 5th Dimension:  Aquarius / Let the Sun Shine.   The gallery was dark with people walking around with drinks.  The DJ was the only one that seemed to be interested in the music.

At night, I can glimpse into condos when their blinds are open.  It’s always interesting to see how others have decorated their home.  I saw amazing lights and chandeliers, gorgeous bookshelves neatly tucked into corners, lots of flat screen TVs (I don’t have one) and neatly dressed people generally going about their business.  A couple of years ago, I looked up at a condo and saw a young Asian man working on a large architectural table.  He sat on those high lift chairs and was totally engrossed in his work.  His desk was right by a large floor to ceiling window.  He was in the 2nd or 3rd floor and I could see clearly into his workspace.  I wondered what he was working on and why he was working so late.

I walked by a restaurant that I’ve always wanted to try and peer in. There were 2 guys at a table near the window.  Both were seated very close to each other.  The Asian guy faced the window, he looked to be in his early to mid 20’s with a gentle and friendly smile.  I couldn’t make out the other guy as his back was towards me.  They leaned forward towards each other, intent in their conversation.  The Asian guy looked up at me just as I was about to walk past the large street window.   Hmm... they seemed to be pretty friends and maybe more?

Just ahead was a big guy dressed in a pink outfit.  It’s like one of these 50’s outfit that you might have seen Doris Day wearing in movies.

He had on tight pink pants and a loose pink shirt that was tucked in.  It just didn’t look right even if he wanted to be in drag.  He came out of the bar and just walked a few steps into a nearby door and stood with his back to the street.  I thought he probably just wanted to get a quick cigarette.  But when I crossed the street and looked back, I noticed he had one hand down in his groin, gently shaking it.  Ew… I won’t want to be the person who owns that door.  You hate to step out to a urine sprayed door and sidewalk.

As I continued my walk, I encountered a small group of people.  One of them stepped in front of me.  I glared at him.  He pointed to his name tag and asked me politely if I’ve been stopped tonight by anyone wearing those name tags.  I grunted “No.”  He said he was part of a group doing a survey on homelessness and wanted to ask me some questions.  I eased up and said “Sure.”  He then asked if I had someplace indoors to sleep tonight.  I said yes.  He thanked me and went on his way.  I took a few steps and was a bit puzzled.  Did he just mistake me for a homeless person?  Nah… but why would he stop after only asking the first question?   I called my bf after.  He laughed.  You do look like a bum when you don’t shave.  But it was a work day so I thought I looked decent.    Sigh… so there you have it.  I have a big head and I look like a homeless person.

  • Under the wide sky on a cool evening, everyone amidst the sea of humanity is without a home. At least for a moment, all are equal.

  • Hmmm...I'll have to go for more evening walks and stare up at the condo buildings and see if I see anything interesting. :P

Btw, do you know if the farmer's market is still in Liberty Village on Sundays?  I was passing by the parking lot and didn't see it but maybe I was a bit too late.

  • @brooklyn2028 - it's still early in the year.  According to the website, it's gonna open in June.  Check out  http://www.my-market.ca/  for more info.  There used to be another market at Trinity Bellwoods Park on Tuesdays too.  I'm not sure if it's coming back this year or not.

  • @Norcani - I'd like to think so too.

  • Wow so much in just one evening!! May be the guy in the pink outfit was a pimp, and thought you looked cute??lol. A homeless person? you ?naah!  Somone was probably trying to pull your leg. Next time take your bf with you on your walk.

  • The haggard but sexy out of bed look can often be mistaken for the bum on the street look.

  • @ZSA_MD - yeah, I guess I'm just a bit observant on my walks.

@alchemystfury - my bf likes it when I'm clean shaven.  But on weekends, I don't shave.  He definitely will not call my scruffy look to be haggard but sexy.

  • I am doing ok, just doing the same thing over and over again. Every single day. and hope something will come out differently.

  • What were you wearing? o_O

Did they know Matt's salary probably is equal or greater than the whole group of people's salary put together?

  • Condo watching or house watching is like watching people at an airport or sitting in the lobby of a hotel and watching the people. I love it! I guess I never thought how I look when I go at in the evening. Most of the time I am going to the beach so I most likely look homeless.

  • got mistaken for a bum?  what were you wearing anyway?  anyhow, people watching while out walking can be fun, as i've done the same in the past when i used to live in the states.  miss those days.  never stopped by anyone for anything, though.

  • maybe they were trying to determine the percentage of homeless people wandering the streets?  does that make you feel better?  =D

i love your casual observations; you always find something interesting about everything you come across.

  • Maybe you weren't walking in a straight line?  Maybe all the looking into other homes and buildings made them think you were longing to have a place indoors to stay that night?  Maybe they thought you were cute and were using it as a pick-up line?  "Hey, baby... what's your sign?  You got a place indoors to sleep tonight?  "

  • I loved reading this post...   walking down a street observing what people are doing can be quite fun (and disgusting at times too)!

  • Did that guy ever say what organization he is from and what was the purpose of their survey? Maybe it is just a way to randomize their sample by just asking whoever that starting question... I wonder at their research method =P

Oh dear... come to think of it, I think I have lost that interest in observing random strangers... hm...

  • I can't judge you by your looks, but you don't write like a bum.  On the other hand, how would I know how a bum writes.  Maybe it is all perception...Anyway, thanks for putting a smile on my face.

  • @vsan79 - don't get discouraged.  Maybe you need to try something different?

@Wangium - just my usual clothes (long sleeve tshirt, windbreaker, khaki pants), running shoes...  LOL at the salary, trust me, my salary is quite modest.

@Fatcat723 - maybe I'm a solitary creature and people watching is part of that.  But it's a rich vein of material to draw from for my blogging and day dreaming.

@rudyhou - just stuff I wore to work but I had a long sleeve tshirt over it because it was a bit chilly (see response to Wangium).

@kunhuo42 - if I ever visit my relatives in Baltimore (I'm not close to them though), I'll jot down some of my observations.

@christao408 - hahahaha... I really doubt it.  I mean, why did they stop me but not the others near me?  Next time, I'm gonna dress like Tawn!

@Dezinerdreams - glad you liked it.

@ZenPaper - he just said he was working on behalf of the City of Toronto.  I'm not sure what their research method is either but it's one entry for my blog.

@Esbartman - I sometimes look like a bum when I write. (unshaven, well worn tshirt with holes, ripped pair of shorts, unshaven for days...).  I write my best when I look my worst.  Yeah... that's my new slogan!

  • U know...I think I used that method to pick up people before when I was really young

    Did it work?

  • @Wangium - hahaha... you can be so silly.

  • Pwned!!  LOL

  • This is one interesting evening walk! Mattie being perceived as a homeless person?! Good grief!!

  • As I read the last paragraph I thought to myself, perhaps it was just a question to prompt awareness of those who aren't fortuate enough to have a place to lay their head.

I enjoy wandering like that, just taking in the sites around me. Usually I make up little stories in my head about who the people are and what they're doing.

    Have a great Tuesday mate,

    *~matthew~*

  • @CareyGLY - yeah... hahaha

    @curry69curry - I know, it's pretty bizzare.  I mean, I really don't look that scruffy.

    @bleuzeus - perhaps you're right.  It's food for thought.

  • ha! Love living downtown....
