Another effortless (not lazy) entry...
I made some soup with silkie chicken, yam (wai san), goji berries, dates and dried longan. I make this every so often. These chicken used to be very expensive and sometimes my mom would make two batches of soups to get every last ounce of flavor. I soaked the dried stuff first (especially the yam) and simmer everything for about 3 hours or so. The soup has a sweet flavor. You'll see a fair bit of oil in the last picture. Since
I didn't drink it the same night, I was able to skim it off easily after a night in the fridge.
Ok, I confess. I wrote about this soup before and if you're a regular
reader, I'm sure you'll remember it. My creative well has run dry.I made some freshly squeeze orange juice some time ago. I don't
normally make OJ, I just eat the oranges. But I had quite a few
so I just juiced them. They were incredibly sweet.
It's been a long week and I feel so mentally drained. I swear,
every ounce of intelligence in my brain has been wrung out.
I couldn't even do a simple math routine this afternoon. I stared at it
and resorted to using a spreadsheet to calculate it instead.
Yep... not all Chinese guys are good at Math.*edit: I really hate this Xanga text editor.

Mm, that looks yummy:)
wow...i'm always amazed by your cooking!!!
Those dark chickens are nutritious especially for pregnant women. My mom made chicken soup with the same ingredients, when my pregnant cousin is preparing for her child birth.
Maybe you need pig-brain soup+Chinese herbs to help on your math problem?
What's up with your editor? Do you use the same one as the rest of us? Seems like some formatting issues here.
Oh, glad you used the chicken of color. LOL
Does the cooking help to relieve stress? The exact opposite is true here. We all shudder in fear when I offer to cook.
I have tasted the soup before. My boss, doctor of oriental medicine, prescribes this soup for some of her patients.
when I looked at the picture of the chicken I thought it was a large frog. I am glad that you are keeping up with the tradition of using family recipes from childhood. Yeah, nothing like fresh squeezed orange juice.
yes, i remember you writing about that soup! i like the shot with all the oranges... i haven't eaten an orange in a while, come to think of it.
hahahaha it's ok, sometimes my brain is so tired i resort to a calculator for simple addition!
I need some skills in cooking. I enjoy doing it, I just don't do it enough.
Your photos always make me want to try.... thank you for that.
have a great weekend Matt.

@davidmiya - thanks.
@onmovement - hahaha... I just cook simple stuff.
@curry69curry - pig brain soup? You know what? I do remember my mom making that when I was young.
@christao408 - yeah, it's the same Xanga editor. Maybe it just doesn't like me. Or there's a conflict with these themes.
@Esbartman - hahaha... I'm sure your cooking is just fine. Yes, it does relieve stress for me.
@Fatcat723 - this is the only recipe I know but there are many others. The chicken (in conjunction with the other ingredients) is said to help rejuvenate the body especially after a serious illness.
@ZSA_MD - I wish I had more time to spend with my mom to really learn all those recipes she had.
@kunhuo42 - your brain gets tired too? hahaha
@bleuzeus - I think it's like photography, you just gotta keep doing it. Unlike photography though, you have to eat your own mistakes.
@ElusiveWords - Yeah, it could have to do with the themes. I've never been a fan of themes just because, as attractive as they are, you seem to get locked into a style that doesn't fit everything you might want to do. For example, the text column being so much narrower than many pictures you might want to post.
The oranges look very nice! Yummy! Sounds like you like to cook! I want a sample of the soup, hahaha.
@mmmagination - some soups are relatively simple to make... you should try it sometime. Yeah, I like cooking.
i thought that was a fucking frog till i read the entry. why is is black?
@hangshimkim - it's a different type of chicken (silkie). The skin is black.
