  • There are times when I have to prune my subscriptions.  Every so often, I'll look at the blogs I subscribe to and prune a few.  Either there blogs have gone in a different direction or they have stopped writing altogether.  I've pruned a couple of "friends" too.  I don't understand some of their mass messages.  The other reason I'll unsubsribe is if I don't get any feedback on any of my comments.  Gee... I am not looking for a response to every comment.  But surely one out of 20 or 30 must have struck a chord.  Anyways... no hard feelings.

I used to subscribe to a couple of the more popular blogs in Xanga.  They are the ones you see in the front page of Xanga.  I thought they would be interesting and thought provoking.  There were a couple of interesting and funny entries.  But the rest weren't.  But I felt as if I was an outsider looking in and wondering when I could be accepted.  The comments weren't interesting either.  Most of the time when I read your blog, I'll also check out the comments.  If I find someone who made an interesting comment, I'll check out their blog.  It's one of the way for me to find new blogs to read / subscribe.

Ok - end of whining session.
I made this steak and mushrooms.  The steak was cut up into cubes and the browned.  I didn't want my dad to cut too much.  The mushrooms were a combination of white and brown mushrooms.  I added some onions as well.  They went into the pan that I used to cook the steak so it picked up a lot of the flavor.  I used a bit of sherry to deglaze the pan.  I added some scallions, garlic and a bit of mustard.

I had extra mushrooms so I used it in an omelette the next morning.

  • I prune my subscriptions and "friends" too. Sometimes it gets very complicated when the other person reacts but I don't care- I do it anyway.

  • the food looks so nice!!
must've tasted very very good, too bad I'll never get to taste it in reality~ haha

  • I have recently pruned my subscription list for similar reasons (obviously, I chose to keep you).  I also read the comments and explore outward, making both interesting and disappointing connections.  I came to your site through a mutual friend, and I see why he enjoys you.  And oh, how I love steak and mushrooms, and omelettes with mushrooms.  Thanks for sharing!

  • Maybe it's time to do some Spring 'pruning'? I also noticed a number of people have either disappeared from the earth or stopped blogging at all!

Mushrooms will always make a good side dish to steaks!

  • The steak and mushrooms look good. It's even better when you can use it for something else the next meal.
I can understand pruning those who don't like to reciprocate. I don't even expect one person to comment on every one of my blogs. But a comment every once in a while surely wouldn't hurt.

  • I completely agree with you. I recently pruned more than hundred friends and subscriptions. I still visit many of them, but my inbox was so full of these so called friends, whom I hardly knew. It was not a matter of who has the most... so since I didn't get too many comments, I chose to say bye to them.

About your food, when did you say you are coming here? I need the entire list of all the things that you need, so I can have every thing ready for you to cook when you get here. Love you.

  • eww, mushrooms....

i don't prune back my subscriptions, because anyone who is actively writing i will try to pay attention to, and that's about that.  i don't have a long list of subscribers, which helps.  i've tried following some of those blogs that make the front page of xanga, but for some reason i never stick with it; i guess i lose the sense of a personal connection when i'm but one of hundreds of people who comment on a blog with no hope of having that person read my blog in return.

  • Yeah, I find it necessary to prune from time to time, too.  What makes Xanga work is the community and that requires interaction, not one-way action.

@ZSA_MD - Okay, seriously now.  I'm going to be in KC in August and depending on how my work schedule shapes up, I'd love to come over for a visit.  If Matt wants to come down from Toronto we can have a Quincy Xanga Meet-Up.  Yeah!

  • subscriptions, subscription everywhere, (prune); mushroom, mushroom every meal, (eat); lol. I am trying my dry humor, hehe. smile, just to get the stress and lack of sleep out of me.

By the way, I am going to Calgary next month, hope the weather will be better than last time when I caught the worst snow of the season.

  • I did read your post and the comments. I very seldom prune my list - unless I find that some completely ignore my postings. I guess I am thinking along the same lines as Aaron.

  • @Dezinerdreams - well, I'm sure over time people have unsubscribed me.  I don't take it personally though.

@tomatoboi - the steak was a bit tough but it was tasty.  The mushrooms were better than I had expected.  You just have to cook the moisture out it'll leave a lot of water on your dish.  The food always looks better in pictures.  Maybe after you taste it, you'll wish you hadn't asked.

@Esbartman - thanks for the compliment.

@curry69curry - yeah... there's a couple of favorites that I used to read and they have stopped blogging.  I don't know why.

@zionlover - yeah... I agree.  I also get those subscription remorse too.  You subscribe to someone and after a few months, you ask yourself - why the heck did I subscribe to this?

@ZSA_MD - the Xanga "friends" have always puzzled me.   As for the list... the pics always look better than the "taste".

@kunhuo42 - lol at your reaction to mushrooms... yeah, I agree about the personal connection.  I've come to appreciate that a lot over time, more than anyone here probably would realize.

@christao408 - I like the sense of community here in Xanga but wish we had some of the nicer themes from WordPress.  As for a Quincy get together ... I'll be like a junior sous dishwasher to the two of you.

@stevew918 - it was cold in Calgary a couple of weeks ago (I have colleagues working there).  Apparently there are some very good restaurants there that you should try.  I'm guessing you work in the energy sector?

@Fatcat723 - I love it when people write insightful comments, they are almost like mini blogs.  You'll never be pruned from my list.

  • Awww, but it does make sense. There's no need to keep connecting with someone that you have no interest in. It seems sad though as friends and stuff should stay, but it's life that friends come and go. The steak and mushrooms look good!

  • @mmmagination - yeah... but Xanga friends are different.  I get these invites from people I don't know.  There blog entries aren't my cup of tea so to speak...

  • Oh, that omlet makes me hungry.... I mean really hungry. :)

I have to trim down my subs at times as well. I feel bad, but there are those who I either don't have time to read or who aren't posting any longer.  Then there are those who I miss dearly and wish would post.  I tend to mourn the loss of friends here a great deal.
Have a great weekend Matt,,, enjoy

  • @bleuzeus - get thee to a kitchen pronto and start preparing it!    yeah, I keep telling myself though pruning is healthy.  I only have so much time to read so it has to be worthwhile for me.

  • @ElusiveWords - Oh, you know that we'll both be running around supporting the real star of the show.  It is her kitchen after all!

  • ...teach me how to cook?

=( it's bad... just looking at that is making me more and more hungry
and it's like 2AM over here

  • I agree with your 'outsider' sentiments. Sometimes it does indeed feel like a popularity contest. In any case, a pat on the back for you for telling it like it is.

  • @Devilzgaysianboi - it's not that hard to cook.  Ask your mom to show you a few simple recipes.  I learned from my mom and from watching all those cooking shows on TV.

@stepaside_loser - and a pat on your back too for being a faithful reader.  *pat pat*

  • mushrooms omelette?? i wanna try it next time!! you are so creative matt =p

  • Were you approached by someone that asked you to advertise his blog?

  • @lcfu - the omelette was pretty good.

    @Wangium - huh?  nope.

  • the omelet looks yummy :)
