  • Mattie... the "tough" guy

When I walk in my neighborhood at night, I always try to be aware of my surroundings and the people near me.  There is crime in my neighborhood.  It has all the issues one would expect in any large urban environment.  On the plus side, there's a lot of pedestrian traffic and cars / buses / streetcars so I'm not that worried.  I don't venture down side streets, cut across dimly lit parks or explore dark alleys.  But I do pay attention to my posture and how people may perceive me.  One of the things I've learned over time is not to look like a victim.

I walk with a sense of purpose even though I'm just unwinding.  My back is straight, my head is high and shoulders back.  I try not to walk with my hands in my pockets.  I never look down or walk hunched over as if I'm sad or lost in thought.  When people walk past me, I try to listen to their footsteps and make sure they are walking away.  I might glance behind discreetly or look for their shadows from the street lights.  Drunks are the worse and they are hard to predict especially if they are in packs.  Fortunately my area isn't near the clubs and aside from the odd drunk here and there - I've never had problems with them.

As people approach my direction, sometimes they may look at me.  I'll look right back just to let them know I've noticed them.  But I don't glare at them.  This facade of toughness has served me well over time.  In reality, I don't know any self defense.  I have never been in a fight.  (ed note:  Matt punched a girl once when he was in Gr. 8.).
My only weapon is my "pen" - well - keyboard.  I can just see a mugging scene unfolding.  "If you're gonna rob me, you better think twice.  I'm going to write about you and it won't be flattering.  I have over a 100 subscribers now so get lost!"

So if you see some tough but funny looking dude walking at night.  It might be me.  But don't worry - I'm just a softie inside.  As for that girl in Gr. 8, she was bigger than me and was quite mean to me that day.  It wasn't a hard punch.

  • I'd suggest getting a large dog such as a German Shepherd, that way, I'm sure you'll get some respect! LOL

  • @curry69curry - large dogs.. mean large poop to pick up.  I'm not really a dog person.  But I loved your suggestion... lol.

  • your "threat" to the potential bad guys made me LOL!

  • no dog pls... learn martial art!! azazazazzzzaaaaaa whoooa =p
or follow me to shaolin :)

  • hire bodyguard ; )

  • I am in Calgary downtown and surprised at the number of homeless here who would approach people for money.  One guy was "brave" enough to soft-hit me on my shoulder to ask for money.  I was hoping to hire you, Mattie, to come to Calgary to protect me.  Now, after reading this blog,  I may change my mind, hehe.

  • would it scare you more if i say they won't just rob you, most nowadays would really make sure you won't come after them next time - thus the presence of a gun?

i've been seeing reports about certain individuals who got rob and lost their lives along the way. pretty sad coz' the very reason they had it was because of a mobile phone.

well, i guess it depends on which area and how big the level of the need for money.

just always be careful. no matter how tough you look, you just don't know, right?

  • Okay, there are a lot of potential lines of teasing here:

    - You don't explore dark alleys? That's not what I heard.
    - The way you describe your posture, for some reason I picture on a runway instead of strolling through the neighborhood.
    - So let me make sure I understand: You make eye contact then if they're cute you discreetly glance back at them?
    - You punched a girl in the face?! Oh, I don't even know what to say...

Glad you're able to project such a butch image and scare off potential evil-doers, though.

  • HAHA...I think all of in the city do that...act tough. I also keep 911 pre-programmed on the cell...first number in the phonebook. I keep the cell out and ready to one touch dial when I walk through potential "hazard" areas.

@christao408 - that was funny as hell.

  • @tomatoboi - I think that might work... the muggers will laugh so hard they can't chase me.

@lcfu - Shaolin sounds good.  I don't stand chance of memorizing "azazaz...."

@CareyGLY - what kind of videos do you watch?  I only watched the first 40 seconds ... it was very strange.

@zozoyork - maybe you can be the bodyguard?

@stevew918 - you picked a great time to be in Calgary.  I understand it's pretty cold.

@Renatojr3 - I will, I don't go out when it's quiet.  The streets here are usually quite busy.

@christao408 - I punched her in the shoulder.  I think you've read more between the lines than I intended... lol.

@macphoto - yeah... judging from the feedback, I may have to recalibrate my "tough guy" image.  hahaha

  • You have to watch the whole think!  It's hilarious.  It was made to teach Japanese women English. It's wrong on so many levels, but a riot!

  • @macphoto - It is odd, though.  I know that Toronto is a big city and all, but as an American, I think of Canada as being generally safer than the US and Canadians less fearful of crime.  Maybe that's a result of watching Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine".

  • @christao408 - I've been living in this neighborhood for almost 10 years.  There's been 5 murders within walking distance that I know of.  While it is becoming a lot more gentrified with galleries, restaurants, stores (pet stores, yoga, baby clothing, food stuff), coffee shops... there's still an edge to it.  When I first moved in, the hookers were always hanging near my condo.  They've moved further down the street now.  Drug deals were done in broad daylight - it's a bit more discreet.

  • I am uber aware of my surroundings as well. Especially if I'm walking alone. I'm no real threat to anyone but I'd like to think I can protect myself if need be. (my fingers are crossed that I'll never have to find out.)
    Be safe mate... *~matthew~*

  • @christao408 - yes I think of canada as safer too.

  • Toronto is still relatively safe as far as a city is concerned...
    Have you been mugged?
Why did you feel like you have to act this way?

  • Haha!  I love the depiction of the fight.  Why did you punch that girl in grade 8?  Didn't your parents teach you not to hit women.

  • @ElusiveWords - I guess that makes sense.  I have traveled there on business several times and at least twice stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott not too far from Eaton Centre.  There definitely were some areas that seemed a bit iffy.  Well, keep walking tall!

  • @bleuzeus - I hope you'll never find out either. (in a good way that is...)

@Wangium - I haven't been mugged.  My neighborhood is changing.  When I first moved in, it was pretty edgy. I just try to be careful.  I've been startled a couple of times.  Toronto is relatively safe.  But I guess everything is relative.

@brooklyn2028 -  Gee... I was only 13 at that time.  I guess she was annoying me or something.  I haven't thought about that until I wrote this entry.

  • just a quick note -- you can actually defend yourself with a pen, or something that looks very much like one:

    http://theawesomer.com/pocket-shark-pen/9114/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubotan

the latter one is more serious and used by law enforcement as a supplemental weapon.

  • @dynamiqvision - oh wow... that Kubotan thing is deadly.  Did you learn about this from your research for TA?

  • @ElusiveWords - Yeah, it looks deadly although I think it's most effective at  disabling. It'd probably be pretty hard to kill someone with that, unless you gouged their eyes out or something. Yup, I learned about it from TA lol.

  • Good for you!  I was worried about you the other night as you were going for a late night walk.

  • You know what? The big news story here at the moment is about Indian international students and the many racial attacks on them that have happened lately. A comment that keeps coming up is that the reason why they are attacked is because they "walk without showing confidence".

I didn't realise that the way someone walked could determine whether they were attacked or not, but I guess it's true.

From now on, I am going to walk like I'm armed and dangerous.

  • so...i'm guessing you're a top?

  • @ABSOLUTmichael - lol... you're silly sometimes.

  • @dolphin27 - no worries... I'm fine.

@stepaside_loser - just be safe.  For some reason, I've always imagined you to be a bit bigger or taller than other Asian guys, 5 '10" or so.

  • OMG! I cracked up at Chris' comment. I love him. Matt, do what Reen (macphoto) does. Get the 911 or the # that's supposed to relate to 911 in Canada. Buy mace and hang it in your kepy chain. Spray them when they come too close for comfort. LEARN MARTIAL ART!! Make me happy.

  • @ZSA_MD - hahaha... yeah I liked Chris's comment too.  It's really tough to act tough around here.  I think my ultimate protection will be the muggers rolling on the floor laughing at me while I run away.

  •  ha ha ha  Silly boy! did you even read what I wrote?

  • @ZSA_MD - of course... hee hee.  That sounds like something my mom would have asked me.

  • I had a good chuckle reading this post; even more so when I read Chris's comments!

  • @ElusiveWords - LOL really? how funny. well, i thought my two or three posts refering to my shortness would have given a more acurate picture. glad you thought i was big though ;) lol how inappropriate, these type of jokes just won't work.
