  • Coldplay - July 30th

My bf and I went to see Coldplay on Thursday night.  It was my first time seeing them and they were absolutely amazing.  Old favorites such as Yellow and Clocks continue to sound fresh.  My all time favorite, Fix You, was as good as I had imagined it could be.  The poignant Scientist, a song that most people in a relationship can identify with, still seemed intimate at the cavernous Rogers Centre.  Viva La Vida had the place rocking again after the band had performed a short set on the runway.  They also did another short set deep in the floors.  It included an acoustic version of Billie Jean.  I envy the fans that were so close to them.

They also gave away a free CD (you can download it from their site here).  They didn't seem like big rock stars, just ordinary folks that are humble and level headed.  The show ran for just over 2 hours and at the end, the band just seemed to be so appreciative of the audience's reaction.  During the show, Chris Martin even thanked the crowd for giving up their Thursday night to see them.  Gee... he just seems so sincere and nice!

The only downside to the concert were the 4 young ladies women that sat in front of us.  They started to drink beer before the first opening act and took enough pictures of themselves to last a lifetime.  Fueled with many beers and excessive hormones, they just made a nuisance out of themselves throughout the evening.  One of them had long hair that kept brushing my knee - ugh!  The big chested one with the sunburned shoulders and face would wiggle her breasts as she got in and out for more beers and souvenirs.  I hope their hangovers will last for several days.

I had decent seats.  It's too bad even at that price - it doesn't guarantee that your seatmates will have basic etiquette and courtesy.

*edit:  added a few photos.  They didn't allow "professional cameras" so I used a point and shoot.  I did see someone with a SLR though.  I wondered how he got in.  They searched everyone on the way in for any prohibited materials (e.g. bottled drinks).  My bf was amused - "the guard isn't even cute and he's going to pat me down?"

It was drummer Will Champion's birthday on July 31st but they gave him a cake one day early.

  • Coldplay is one of my favorites too!

I absolutely hate those kind of women/men; they are so annoying!!!

  • sounds like a fun time...minus annoying females...keke

  • @Dezinerdreams - yeah, they were just horrible.  I really hope their hangover will last for days and days.

@onmovement - yeah - Coldplay was fun to watch.  Too bad about the women, can't really do anything about it.

  • Sounds like a rel fun evening. Maybe females should be banned! lololol

  • @Fatcat723 - I'm gonna have half the world's population at my doorstep if I say yes.  lol....

  • you had great seats!

that's exactly how i want to feel at a concert... moved (I didn't feel that way when I saw kt tunstall... and my seats made her 2cm tall).

in contrast with the loud women, did you sit down quietly and sway? i'm curious to know about how people behave in concerts. for a concert to be good, i want to be able to sing the songs with a friend and be part of the crowd.

  • Sweet!  I wanna see Coldplay in concert one of these days.

  • The seats were good - not great.  It was a huge stadium and the zoom feature on the camera made them seem a lot closer.  They had several big screens and the sound was very good (except at the end when I heard a bit of crackling).  Everyone stood up at the start.  If you sat down, you couldn't see anything.  I stood for the entire concert and let the music moved me.

  • @Roadlesstaken - you should, they put on a pretty good show.  I think they are on their last 2 months of the tour.  They only have 4 or 5 more dates in the US - check their site.

  • i'm jealous!  i wanted to go see them but didn't get a chance to.  ah well...  hopefully next time they come around i'll get to go.  it looks like you had decent seats, even if you say they are not that close.

  • @kunhuo42 - lol... you get to go on the NASA plane and you're jealous?  Are you sure you don't need an assistant?

  • Glad you had such a fun time.  Sorry about those annoying seatmates, though.  Similar thing happened while I was waiting in line for my flight from St. Louis back to KC.  Since the flight had been delayed a few hours a group of middle-age women had hit the bar and were loud and obnoxious.  Thankfully, they didn't sit near me.

@kunhuo42 - @ElusiveWords - I'd choose a ride in the vomit comet over the concert, personally.

  • Too bad about the women Matt. You had fun, and that's what counts. Once we went to see John Denver in St.Louis, when we lived there, and thought we had paid very high price for the seats; but when we got there, we were amazed to see how FAR away from the stage we were!! But that was fun too.

  • @christao408 - your flight was delayed in St.Louis?? what a bummer. You should have just allowed me to drive you there

  • i went to see them for this tour too! they're still touring for viva la vida? i went to see them last halloween--they had pumpkins that shot out confetti from the ceilings! i agree, it was a great show...glad you had fun.

  • that sounds like an amazing concert.  i'm jealous.

  • @ABSOLUTmichael - yeah, I remember your entry about them and I'm glad I saw them.

@XxRainyxMondayxX - it was an amazing concert alright... thanks for dropping by.

  • I saw them too at the hollywood bowl just a few weeks ago! =)

  • @ZSA_MD - There was a mechanical and at one point the flight was to be delayed 4 hours.  Then they swapped planes and it was only a 2-hour delay.

  • Those aren't bad for a point and shoot.
I would have helped you sneak your SLR in
Glad you had fun.  Too bad about the bitches.

  • @CareyGLY - they frisk you on the way in, good lord - I kept hoping I won't giggle as I'm ticklish.   I mean, what would I say if the pat me and found the camera?  "Oh that hard thing?  I'm excited about being frisked by you?" lol....

  • There must have been 70% of the gay Toronto in the concert

  • @Rm2046 - hmm... Coldplay, French Laundry - someone has been living the good life!

@Wangium - huh?  They have a strong following in the gay community?

  • @ElusiveWords - haha these events don't happen all the time! They were both plans that I didn't pay for, otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford any of them

  • I love Coldplay! .Well, I also get annoyed by some drunken concert goers sitting near me during a open-air concert, we are allowed to bring wine and picnic baskets.

  • I like some of their songs.

  • I have a great fondness for Coldplay.. and now I'm just a tad bit envious. I would love to see them in concert.
Who else have you seen lately? (if anyone)  I wont usually fight the crowds to see people live unless it's a
smaller venue but I know I would see them if they get close.
I'm glad you had a good time.
    Cheers..

  • Awesome! My favorite song from Coldplay is "A Rush Of Blood To The Head". Glad you had a blast...
