  • Another stroll in my 'hood

I took my camera again on another stroll in my neighborhood.  There's quite a few charming old houses.  Those of you that know architecture can probably fill in the blanks on what style these houses are.  There's quite a few duplexes here.  A lot of the houses here are in various stages of remodeling and renovation - from "I haven't even started" to "All done!".  Some have nice little urban gardens.  It's so shady in spots with the mature trees that it's hard to grow a decent lawn.  Frankly, I think a flowerbed with some trees and shrubs are a lot better.

Can you see yourself sitting on the porch reading, having a coffee / tea or just taking a quick nap?

Check out the little balconies on this house - from top to bottom.

Hmm... can't remember why I took this shot.

This is an interesting house.  It's pretty long and sits adjacent to a park.
It starts from the yellow covered entry way just by the signpost to the right side.

It's pretty narrow too (although it isn't the narrowest house I've seen).

Slow down!  I think there was a stop sign or a speed bump just ahead.

If you see someone lurking around your neighborhood with a camera & looking very suspicious, don't call the cops. That just might be me!

  • haha "Whoa"?  never seen that on the ground before.

  • This is my ideal neighborhood. It reminds me of Savannah.

  • @Roadlesstaken - yeah, I did a double take when I saw that.

@upandoutward - I like this neighborhood.  Great stores, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, galleries, close to public transit - it's gotten very gentrified in the past few years.

  • Reminds me of Anne Rice's Witching Hour
where I can actually feel the LOVE people have of their houses
and how the house can take on so much character and personality!
I suppose only the old ones can do that eh?

  • @ZenPaper - unfortunately some of the really old houses are getting run down.  Some of the older residents here just don't have the money to renovate them. It's hard to find new houses in subdivisions with the same character.  But they are newer and probably don't need a lot of repairs yet.

  • where is this? College area? Or china town area?

  • @chrispycrunch - Queen West - just west of Trinity Bellwoods Park.

  • hehe i thought about the implications of you strolling your neighborhood with a camera

Breathtaking pictures, major props for the photography

  • I really would like to see the inside of one of these houses.

  • @ElusiveWords - Gentrified! Do I smell a fellow city and regional planning interest?

  • @a_place2freely_scream - thanks for the compliment.

@Fongster8 - yeah... some of them look like they have been renovated extensively from what I could glean from looking in through the windows.

@upandoutward - hee hee... you have a keen sense of smell.  But alas, I only took a couple of courses in urban geography.  One thing I've noticed in the neighborhood are a lot of kids stores and pets stores.  I see young families in the parks and markets. I hope this means that the ugly urban sprawl is beginning to slow down.

  • Beautiful houses! Would have been even better if the garden/bushes were a little maintained.

    LOL @ Whoa!

  • those houses are so nice! they're like dollhouses. you'd rarely see that kind of stuff here in sf.

  • Yeah, I agree.  I really like those houses.  Is that what yours looks like? :)

  • @Dezinerdreams - yeah, some of the gardens were very messy (probably what mine would look like if I had a house).

    @JonasApproved - expensive dollhouses...

    @CareyGLY - lol... I live in a condo.

  • Ooo, I would absolutely love to have a porch like that. I may never actually leave the house if I had one though!

  • You could have been walking through the neighborhood in which I was raised. The homes were all in need of repair but the neighborhood was like one family.

  • Quincy has homes like these Matt. You would go absolutely crazy if you saw them. I loved the house with the white fence. Very art neavou around a Victorian back drop.

  • That house looks neat. Cute and colorful.

  • @Fatcat723 - sounds like the kind of neighborhood where everyone knew what was going on and if you needed anything, you only had to ask a neighbor.

@ZSA_MD - that sounds very nice - I would be out taking pictures for sure!

@mmmagination - yeah, they are - some of them are really huge and must have been owned by prominent families back then.

  • WOAH = amazing street paint/sign. Those houses are reeeeally cute! The houses in my area are not very good looking at all, or they're mass-produced. It'd be cool to live in a neighborhood with all unique lookinng houses with gardens and fences and puppies and cute boys.

  • I do realize a few of these homes are (part) brick structures, and their styles are Victorian? They're all very cute and have woodsy gardens!

  • I will indeed surprise you some time with my own stroll of the area where I live. I love the narrow building... and much like Fongster8, I'd love to see the insides of some. :)
Perhaps next time we take the stroll we'll be holding hands? (just a pleasant thought, at least on my end.Ha)

  • @secade - well, some parts of my 'hood are really rundown so all you see is the "good side".

@curry69curry - yeah - they are kinda cute even if some of them are massive.  While I would love to live in one of those homes, I am not sure I would be able to take care of them.

@bleuzeus - looking forward to the pics of your neighborhood.

  • i like those photos a lot!!

and yeah, i wish i have a good camera...

  • That lil balcony is awesome!  I want one in my future home!  :)

  • I love houses with porches.  Beautiful shots!

  • I sort of miss the red bricks style of the north east

  • @maniacsicko - thank you, I think with today's "point and shoot" cameras, there's still a lot of functionality in a modest budget.

  • @JL789 - yeah, isn't it cute - neat little place to get away for a while.

@christao408 - my parent's house had one too - they made very good use of it.

@Wangium - isn't the housing in SF pretty interesting too?  I sometimes wonder what everyone's neighborhood is like.
