I.T. – You’re not it for me.
Thank you all for your comments, insights and experiences on Macs and PCs. I very much appreciate it. Despite working for an IT company, I’m pretty well useless when it comes to technology.
On a different note…
I am fairly competent at my job, but I know this isn’t what I truly want to do. I’ve felt this way for the past few years now. I see my job as simply a way to support myself. While I don’t hate it, it doesn’t stir my heart. I’ll put in the extra hours when required and do all those things people expect from a senior professional. When I’m in a cynical mood, I simply call myself a corporate whore.My heart lies elsewhere. I don’t know where that is yet. Writing and photography are two things I like to do a lot more. It requires a different skill set and sensibility. I don’t know if I can make a living out of it.
But we’ll see – I think I need to plant a few seeds now. I have to pack my bags and head into the office soon. Thankfully my day is clear of meetings and appointments.

Good luck with whatever you want to do!
Or you can always start writing/photography as a side job.
Good luck!!! I hope you find your calling soon.
good luck!
Work for National Geographics
I think to go into writing, successfully and in a stable, secure manner, you really have to start in a different field. A lot of the more popular writing lately has been very research intensive stuff (Ken Follet for example, or more testimonial/memoir-based (Amy Tan). “Write about what you know” is something that’s thrown around a lot, and I think that it’s very true. If you want to write, but feel like you don’t want to write about the stuff you know now, go learn about something you’d like to write about. Learn and write and be awesome
invest in a HUGE HUGE camera, take some photography courses, join some photographer groups, plan a trip somewhere for a photo-taking adventure, get to know some gallery people, see if you can get an exhibit going for a non-profit fundraising cause… and before you know it, you are doing something you enjoy and completely different from your day to day work!
My sister’s friend has OCD and photography is her passion. As part of her treatment, she left for Japan and stayed in a zen monastery for some time. She took a lot of photos. After she got back, she organized a fund raiser for the local OCD organization by having her photos exhibited and people silent auctioned for them. She has a very unique eye. Sounds fun? I bet you can do something similar ^^
Sometimes it takes years to discover who we are and where we are most happy. Don’t be afraid to look for that job or position. Take your time but look! You know you and your BF can do a job search in Florida
@ZenPaper -I wish I could leave everything behind and just do it!
@CurryPuffy - hee hee hee, just get a mental disorder and apply for stress leave! You can do it! ^^
@JL789 - that’s an interesting thought. Maybe I can start doing some volunteer writing or photography.
@Dezinerdreams - thank you.
@yang1815 - I’ll need lots of it – thanks.
@Wangium - I have a DVD and photography books from Nat’l Geographic. That’s practically a dream job.
@secade - thank you for the advice.
@ZenPaper - that’s an interesting path your sister’s friend took. I’ll have you and Jason do some psychoanalysis on me.
@Fatcat723 - it’s not easy but I’ll need to carve some time out to do this.
@CurryPuffy - same here – I wouldn’t be able to just drop everything.
ME TOO. I would love to get into photography more…
let’s do it!
I knew you worked for an IT company so I always assumed you were a technie. :P
I think you should write a book of stories about your family a la Wayson Choy!! I would buy it for sure!!
@brooklyn2028 - hahaha… nope, not me. I’m not a techie at all. Wayson Choy is one of my favorite authors!
@smeeta - yeah…. *high five*!
In all seriousness, Matt, without a glimmer of “it’s a blog so I’ll just say something nice” glibness, you really should give some thought to writing. You write beautifully and you convey experiences and feelings in such a stirring way. It would be wonderful to see that tapped into on a professional level.
You should write Matt. The way you talk about simple things, lunch with your dad, the smiles of the nephews and nieces and just ordianry things… you make them sound so extraodinary. But don’t give up your paying job yet.
@christao408 - @ZSA_MD - thank you Zakiah and Chris for those wonderful words of encouragement.
