  • An Early Morning Walk

I took a walk in my neighborhood in the early morning the other week.  I usually walk around my 'hood in the afternoons or evenings.  The 'hood has a different personality in the early morning.  There's almost a small town feel to it.  I nod good morning to a few folks and they do the same.  The air is cool and the sun is still low.  It's the weekend so there's very little traffic.

All the stores were closed and I was surprised there was a coffee shop that was open.  One of the guys was still sweeping out the front and setting up the patio.  I walked in and there were a few early birds in there reading already.  After I placed my order, my ears perked to the music of the Beatles.  Of course - the store was also selling their CDs.   I walk over to a great seat by the windows humming along to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".   The coffee was good and soon I was engrossed in a photography magazine my brother had lent me.

Every so often I would glance out the window and watch the street slowly come to life.  Soon, a couple sits just outside the window with a muscular, short haired dog.  It didn't take long for another dog walker to come by and greet them.  The other dog walker had a smaller dog.  As they were talking the bigger dog playfully pounced on the smaller one.  The small dog did everything possible to avoid the bigger dog.  This simply ended up in leashes being constantly tangled and untangled by the owners.  Whenever the smaller dog tried to move out of range, the bigger dog simply dragged his owner over.

They were soon replaced by a small boy with golden locks and 2 puppies.  The mom was inside ordering a coffee.  The puppies gave the small boy everything he could handle.  One would wander off in one direction while the other sensing freedom was at hand, would try and sneak away.  The boy was probably just 6 years old, with big curls of hair hovering over his head.  He took his job seriously and managed to maintain order until mom came back.

When I walked backed home, I thought to myself that I should do more early morning walks.  It's as if I stumbled on to an open secret.  An hour later and the whole streetscape and feel of the neighborhood is different.  When you're out too early - there's nothing happening.

Survey question - what did you do today?
(ed note:  this is another ploy by Matt to get more comments).

  • love, love, love the early morning hours. i'm sensitive to the energy level of my surroundings, and it's specifically at this time of the day that i'm at my happiest. yes, do take more walks like this, and yes, comment whoring is okay. =)

i worked on my website in my breakfast nook overlooking the pile of dirt and rocks that serves as my backyard.

  • PS - I love that Beatles song!

  • Ploy eh?  Well at least you're honest about it =P .  I just got off work and I'm about to go to the mall with my little cousin to buy him a birthday present!

  • I just wake up and reading your blog. I am an official xanga addict! =P
The morning crowd definitely is interesting... wanna get myself a dog at those times
when everyone is having their morning walks with their dogs.

  • @dynamiqvision - I have been slowly moving my hours to be at work earlier.  Now I'm getting in around 8ish and it feels good to get a lot done before noon.  Yeah, I like a lot of their songs - wish I could have seen them.

@Roadlesstaken - gosh, you're so good with kids.

@ZenPaper - you gotta pick up the dog poop though.  hahaha... you better get some lunch now.

  • I walk early in the morning even before the sun is completely up. I make it to the beach if I can to watch the birds wake and begin to hunt for breakfast. There is a place called "Peaches" where I will stop for breakfast at times. They open at 6AM and everything is made to order. Yes, I do eat too much and have been there often enough to know all the waitresses so my usual table is prepared with my tea when I enter. Makes for a nice eary morning when I can do it.

  • And you forgot your camera?? I can't believe you didn't take pictures of the littel boy and the puppies. I do not want you to get out of your condo without your camera any more.Do you hear me Matt? ( Just like , 'you cannot leave the house without your winter coat!!' ) lol.

We had the celebration of the end of Ramadan, so the early morning was busy with going to the mosque, meeting and socializing with friends. tonight is the big banquet, with foods from India, Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Philippines, and Indonesia.

  • @Fatcat723 - that sounds like a very nice morning routine.  I guess if you were in a farm, you would be the guy that wakes up the roosters every morning.

@ZSA_MD - yeah, I just took my knapsack and left the camera behind.  I'm gonna bring it along next time.  I hope you enjoy the big banquet tonight.

  • I've been a morning person my entire life.  I love the way the world feels early in the morning, fresh, quiet, full of potential.  I love watching how the city starts to come to life as these successive waves of humanity arrive and give life to the street.  Love it.

Sunday morning I was up early and back on my bike after a more than two-month absence.  It was Car Free Day in Bangkok and a group of about 5,000 cyclists rode to one of the universities and posed for a picture.  It was unseasonably warm and sunny, though, so I didn't hang out there long, riding back home and managing to get a flat about two blocks from home.  Thankfully, it happened there instead of somewhere far away.

  • I love early mornings. No one's up! It's so quiet and relaxing.. the hustle isn't out yet. Today, I slept in, went grocery shopping, cleaned house, did some work, had a friend over for coffee, and now we're watching History Channel.

  • yeah... i wanna go back to japan... why? because i love to have my morning walk there...as people will greet each other with konnichiwa :) but anyway matt i will be heading to frankfurt sooner... i will see if german nod good morning or not to me =p

i have just woke up, then cleaned my face,,,,blablabla and just updated my entry and writing you comment now =p

  • I absolutely loved the walk you just took me on....Have been reading just not commenting....I had a good day   Thanks for asking...'Til The Next

  • Dog walkers in Hollywood sometimes make 6 figures...with full benefits.  It's crazy.

    Beautiful imagery!

  • i would rarely ever nod to people. how polite of you.

i had lunch with john because it was our anniversary thing. we had all you can eat korean bbq and then we went to his place to watch three dvds. i fell asleep whilst he watched saw v. i saw most of a chinese movie about the qing dynasty (i didn't like it). and we both watched all of 'the boy with striped pyjamas', about nazi germany and the containment of jewish people and the bond between two boys who are meant to be enemies. we then played cards and i lost $5. now that i'm home, i'm on xanga and i need to notetake.

yes, that was my entire day. hope you enjoyed it haha

  • Sounds wonderful. I really need to find a coffeehouse to sit at around me. I want something a little more personal than Starbucks...

  • @TheCheshireGrins - actually the coffee shop I was in was a Starbucks!  But we have many in the area and another one just opened.  There are 3 Starbucks within walking distance of my condo.

  • @christao408 - I kinda figured you were a morning person.    It's fascinating watching a city wake up - especially a city like Bangkok.

@upandoutward - I used to be a morning person and then became a night owl.  Now I'm slowly switching back to be a morning person.

@lcfu - gosh, you're checking up on blogs before breakfast?   hahaha... so dedicated.

@GracePrince - I'll try to take you on more walks.  I'm glad you're still reading my lil' ol blog

@CareyGLY - 6 figures?  What?  Six figures?  I got a university education and they are getting 6 figures?

    @yang1815 - I see you're a man of few words.

@悉怛多缽怛囉 - huh?  Ai ya... wo bu dong.

  • @stepaside_loser - it sounds like you had a pretty good day with him.

  • I too enjoy the early morning stroll, nice and easy.
Those fellow wanderers seem kind and welcome
    a polite smile and wave.

  • @bleuzeus - I was a bit surprised too.  I half expected them to ignore me.

  • I was trying to sleep a headache off on Sunday morning. :(   I'm planning on going for an early morning run (5:30am) tomorrow.  Wonder how the street will be like.

  • Oh, I would love to have lots of those early morning days and enjoying a cup of coffee. *too busy sleeping* lol :p

  • @brooklyn2028 - I slept in and didn't roll out of bed until 7:20.  I hope your run went well.  Stalker question - do you run by the lake?

@vsan79 - lol... I see you're also battling the rush hour too.

  • @ElusiveWords - LOL!  Yes I do...should I watch out for a man in dark glasses?
