What to do for Christmas Dinner?
For the first time in my life, we're not having Christmas dinner at anyone's home. Not at my brother's, not at my dad's and not in any of our extended family homes. I don't blame my brother - he's hosted so many dinners for everyone. They go all out all the time and spend a few days preparing their house and doing the cooking. It's time they took a break. I told my sister maybe I will cook at my dad's place instead. But my sister said to just get some take out food. What?
I shook my head. At first, I didn't care. I've been pretty cynical about the past few Christmases anyways. I don't send Christmas cards - period. I don't have a single Christmas decoration up at all. I don't like watching any of the TV specials. If I went back in time and visited myself, my younger me would be appalled at what I've turned into. I'm sure he would cry. And I would probably laugh at him.
But you know what, I think I'll tell them to swing by my dad's place for dinner. I'll make something simple but delicious. If they don't want to show up - too bad. If some fat guy in a red suit shows up, I'll rob him and sell all his toys on eBay. What - you think I'm over my grumpy mood?

Might get caught on eBay. I'd craiglist them.
Tradition is a powerful thing...even if you wanted to be cynical, you can't help but want to hold on to the tradition...
I'm trying to get into some kind of Christmas spirit, but it's mostly just making me angry. Like my Xmas CD trade thing. Or randomly baking cookies and brownies for people.
It's a weird time, I ratchet up and down a lot =/
Don't sell them on E-bay; send it out to your xanga mates.
Sweet!
Tradition - boy that is the stable of most families. We still get together for brunch but the big Christmas Suppers are gone. Good but simple food is always good!!
I think you doing the dinner thing sounds alright. If you go to the effort, they should turn up? I hope they do.
My family doesn't do anything for Xmas, so no pressure for me. If we feel like it, we'll have a seafood BBQ.
BTW, you sound stressed, so maybe don't go to great lengths to prepare for your xmas dinner... why not just buy everything and set it on the table
hmm... maybe you should just put out some appetizers or finger food so people can come by, socialize and nibble a bit, and then leave when they want to -- something casual. we're thinking of having some people over and doing just that.
i can understand the lack of christmas spirit; if it wasn't so commercialized and forced down your throat since before thanksgiving, this season might actually be a lot more meaningful.
We have another turkey to make for Christmas -- I'm not a fan of ham or duck. I can't wait!
hmmm, maybe something happened between the younger you and now about Christmas that you become anti Christmas lol.
Well I dont celebrate Christmas but I enjoy that public holiday.
I'm just baking a lot, and dreaming about moving away for ever. Maybe we're all grumpy for the holidays
@secade - just don't bake some hash brownies to combine the dream and the food into one! haha
I think the holidays are great when one's young but I think the season just puts too much pressure on adults and all kinds of "family dynamics" come into play. I think your solution of a toned down family gathering sounds fine.
Haha~That sounds like a good prequel to blog about your 'Christmas past and present'. I guess Christmas and other holidays are a good time to gather with the family and keep in touch! Of course, it'd be great if someone volunteer to cook!
I can send you a trukey from here, if you want.Let me know. You are so sweet to want to host the dinner for every one at dad's place. I think it will make dad very happy.
I am way over Christmas this year.
In many ways parts of my family are a mess.
There are things I don't want to deal with.
Things I can do nothing about. I will make
time for those who choose to behave themselves.
Times like this I'm glad my parents are no longer among us.
(Scrooge-matthew here, sorry)
Just happened across your blog radomly. Though mugging santa was a clever idea. Just eat him for Chistmas dinner. He's not human, he's an elf.
Tell me the address, I'll come by and rob the fat guy in red suit with you!
and of course to taste your delicious cooking too! =D
@yang1815 - good idea... unless they are Nikons, I'll sell them to my brother.
@Wangium - cynical sentimentalist - that's me.
@arenadi - baking and cooking (along with writing) can be therapeutic in my opinion... anyways, let's hope we can both snap out of it.
@Dezinerdreams - hahaha... sure, but then I'll be the Santa.
@mmmagination - I hope it'll turn out okay.
@Fatcat723 - we're having dinner the next day in the late afternoon - around 3. It's kinda an awkward time. I can't figure out why though.
@stepaside_loser - the seafood BBQ sounds like a great idea. Yeah, I'm a bit stressed right now.
@kunhuo42 - maybe I'll fly over to your place instead.
@upandoutward - another turkey so soon after Thanksgiving? But you do have creative leftovers though.
@vsan79 - I've become a grumpy old man.
@secade - maybe I can turn Santa into a grumpy ol' guy.
@TheLatinObserver - I hope so, I just want to hold on to the last vestiges of family tradition.
@CurryPuffy - none of them will visit me because my dad doesn't drive anymore. There aren't a lot of parking spots in my place either. This way, my dad doesn't have to go anywhere. I can actually prep some stuff at my place, drive over there and finish everything off.
@ZSA_MD - I hope it works out. Thanks for the offer. I've actually never cooked a turkey in my life.
@bleuzeus - sorry to hear that. But you can start your own traditions with lots of love and laughter.
@SpiderAwry - hahahaha... elf stir fry?
@tomatoboi - my food only looks good in pics. Maybe I'll just make instant noodles.
@ElusiveWords - It's good to have goals in life, Matt.
@ElusiveWords - Or give them to me!
Yeah I'm spending Christmas day in an airport/plane, so your version of christmas is wayy better than mine. And I'm sure your delicious soul food will warm the hearts of your family
The idea of preparing something easy at your dad's sounds like a fine idea. It is about being together with loved ones, that's the most important thing.
make sure you don't sell MY toy. n don't unwrap it either. i need it clean and spankin' new, for a long hot christmas night ;p
tell me when you have robbed him... i wanna buy some
I am so shocked I don't know what to say! Mattie, you are being a bad boy!
Seriously though, nice that you're gonna cook dinner for your family. I bet it'll be DELICIOUS!
@Rm2046 - where are you off to?
@christao408 - well, so far no one has responded to my invite. *steam coming out of my ears*
@rudyhou - Santa doesn't bring "adult" toys. hahahaha
@maniacsicko - hahaha, glad there's another guy without any qualms about robbing Santa.
@brooklyn2028 - I guess I'm just not in the mood (and haven't been for the past few years) for Christmas. So far, no one has said they will come for dinner.
well, MY santa does. maybe you should invite MY santa to your dinner party. he should make an interesting dinner guest
@ElusiveWords - I'm heading off to DC for post christmas and new years celebrations
