1. I was walking through my neighborhood and saw a familiar panhandler. He's always polite, doesn't hassle anyone and quick with his thank you's. He was sitting on the steps of a building with a coffee cup in front of him and smoking a cigarette. I grabbed some loose change and was about to deposit it when he said "I'm not panhandling right now." I was still bent down and noticed his coffee cup was upside down. His voice was firm, direct but not angry. He continued to puff away. I stood back up, mumbled "ok" and walked away. It was kinda surreal.
2. My bf and an extra ticket to the Raptors game so I asked a distant cousin if he wanted to go. I've never hung out with him before and only met him a couple of times in the recent years. We were mostly had sporadic email exchanges - usually about cars. He said yes and we met up first for some munchies and drinks. We all had fun - he got along with my bf and I got to learn more about my cousin. We tried to figure out how we were related and gave up much to my bf's amusement. There were lots of laughs throughout the evening (ranging from corporate bailouts - he belongs to one of those companies), cars, work etc... It was good to connect with him and also good for my bf to meet more of my relatives even if they are distant. We all resolved together for drinks after work even though we don't work in the same area.
3. A friend of ours purchased a condo recently. He's one of these young hunks who looks like he could belong in one of those Asian dramas. His interests is sports and religion although he eventually wants to settle down, get married and have lots of kids ("enough to field a soccer team"). He sent me the listing for his condo and it's gorgeous loft with brick walls, exposed wood beams, ducts and polished cement floors. He was very specific with his wants - it had to be an authentic loft (a hard loft vs a soft loft) and he wanted exposed brick walls. It was fascinating to listen to him talk about brick walls. It was almost as if he was describing the perfect girl. I don't often see a straight guy talk like that. But I think I'm stereotyping.

Give the condo hunk my #. We can have lots of kids together!
@CareyGLY - hahaha... he's like you in some ways, very good with kids.
LOL @CareyGLY! Haha
@Dezinerdreams - yeah... the editor will have to reprimand Carey. hee hee...
Wow! the panhandler has his own schedule? "Ok, my hours are Monday to Saturday, 11AM to 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 8PM. Do not disturb me between those times!!" How frikkin' odd is that??
He may be the affluent Panhandler of our times, me thinks!
Wow to #1.
Nice for #2.
Definitely stereotyping for #3.
I have wants for my future house!!!
Well actually I have things already in an Excel file for my future house bwahahaha
@yang1815 - I thought you have your own house? So what sort of things are you looking for?
@ZSA_MD - I guess he was on a break. It's just so bizzare.
@ElusiveWords - Yep I do.
Things from like location, direction, and style of the house to number of pre-wired coax/sound cable outlets in each room. The list is quite long actually haha. Mostly from living in the current house and what I wish it had to noticing things in other people's houses that I like.
I like a man who keeps regular hours lol. We had panhandlers in Washington, DC who I got to know as I past and would always give them something. One morning I ask him if he wanted a cup of coffee and something to eat. He said no thank you I have had breakfast - Egg McMuffin and coffee and MacDonalds. He said thanks for asking and was glad to accept some change.
I suppose that panhandler must be doing pretty well, he doesn't mind skipping a few 'donations'! And sounds like your friend has a pretty well designed loft, any photos?
@Fatcat723 - I once purchased coffee for some panhandler but he turned it down. I found out years afterwards that most of them will turn down food because of fear of poison.
@CurryPuffy - he hasn't moved in yet. The pictures from the listing have also been taken down the real estate site. I hope he'll buy some nice furniture but I think his first purchase will be a big screen TV.
Panhandling is hard work - sometimes you need to take a break.
Regarding #3, I think Michael is that straight man who would be so passionate in describing the type of exposed bricks he wants.
@christao408 - I think you're right. He had some good comments about your living room.
#3 brick walls.... If it's interior that will be so cool ~ NY style condo =)
Agh, I don't get bums. Sometimes I think some of them are just lazy lol.
Haha and the only straight men I know that has such specific wants for homes are either architects or just very artistically inclined.
hahaha even panhandlers have smoke breaks, i guess?
some lofts are really great; they have a lot of personality sometimes and can have unusual interior layouts. but i am still partial to having a real house of my own (even if it means having to take care of the yard!).
Passby ~^^
@zozoyork - yep, interior brick walls. I think he's gonna chain himself to it every night.
@Rm2046 - most of the ones in my neighborhood don't hassle folks. I guess there's quite a few straight men that can be very expressive in architectural features.
@kunhuo42 - yeah, I like lofts too but I do want a small quiet and private backyard, maybe a small vegetable garden would be good too.
@comingzz - thanks for dropping by.
@christao408 - @ElusiveWords - It's funny that Chris mentions this, because when you were writing about the hunky condo guy, I thought "
doesn't seem that odd to me..." haha. Things like this matter! People tend to roll their eyes though, when I start talking about the texture of a specific kind of grain and finish from Koa wood and how it works with certain kinds of lighting and how it looks good with a certain kind of soft fabric. So yes, I do understand the brick thing.
As for the panhandler, how odd.
There are a few homeless people around where I work that I regularly give things to; and none have ever turned me down, even when they're not panhandling and are just sitting around. It seems odd that someone would turn down money. Hell, if you walked up to me and handed me some money, I'd gladly take it haha.
@ElusiveWords - I hardly see any panhandlers in my neighborhood, if there is one the police would show up and talk to them. We all live in a bubble here =P
@arenadi - I love koa wood; the grain of the wood and the colors...they are beautiful!
@arenadi - this is the first time that someone turned me down. Mike - you're pretty knowledgeable about a lot of things.
@nutz4walnuts - really? well, we have quiet a few in our neighborhood. It's fairly gentrified now but there's still an edge to it.
Dreamy Asian hunk? When are you gonna introduce me! Hahaha! Don't tell Felix!
@brooklyn2028 - hahaha.... he's Korean ^^
Some of my straight guy friends are like this -- laser-focused and passionate about one or two subjects. It's really quite cool!
i never thought a panhandler would actually take "off" hours. geez, the things you learn every day. guess even a panhandler could still have his/her dignity intact. by the way, i NEVER known anyone in my life with looks that can be considered as a hunk. not one of my friends and definitely not in my family either. what constitute as a hunk in your book, anyways?
@rudyhou - a hunk? I suppose everyone has different tastes... he's good looking, muscular but not body builder type, funny, loves to eat... (ok - maybe not your traditional definition of a hunk).
Nice.. sign me up for the loft.. I already have the boy to go along with it.
I think perhaps I would have been alittle put off by the panhandler...
is that wrong?
*~matthew~*
1. That's interesting. I don't know... long time ago I felt bad about them, but now I think by helping them out with some loose change is bad for society and public policy. They shouldn't be on the streets.
2. Hanging out with your distant cousin and bf was more fun than watching the game?
3. I want a condo too! But not now, haha. But not a loft.
@bleuzeus - I think I was more stunned than put off.
@mmmagination - unfortunately they don't have anywhere else to go.
hahaha... yes, guess we all have a different taste but i agree with the muscular but not body-builder type. AND that he appreciates food, of all ethnic cultures that is.
