Oyster Boy
One of my first cooking lessons from mom was simply handing her things (spoons, chopsticks, bowls) and stirring sauces. We've been using this brand of oyster sauce since I was a little brat.
For the longest time, I've always thought people would row out to the some lake
and grab these large plant like things called oysters. These oysters would simply
float on the water (like the one on the left side of the label). I also liked the idea of
rowing on a boat with my mom and getting oysters just like those characters in the label.But being the gay little kid that I was, I noticed the boy in the boat. Of course back then I didn't
know what all that was about. It was sort of like an innocent little crush.Years later, I was shopping with J and I told him this story. He laughed at me of course and
jokingly said he knew I always liked young boys. (pls be assured, I'm not a pedophile). I recently got 4 bottles of this oyster sauce because it was on sale. This caused more laughter with J ... "you really like the oyster boy don't you." (it was actually him that told me it was on sale). So now, we just call him the oyster boy.But don't confuse my oyster boy with the restaurant Oyster Boy. It's not a big place and it's
always busy and popular. I haven't been there in awhile though. But I doubt they will have my
oyster boy in the kitchen.

"...being the gay little kid that I was..." HAHA, that made me crack up.
hahaha...awesome Matt.
you're too cute.
Funny that I also have a jar of Lee Kum Kee Oyster sauce in my fridge, I'll be checking out the oyster boy for sure!
Ok I use the Lee Kum Kee Oyster Sauce. Go to the Oriental Grocery Store. Never thought about the label.
I needed oyster sauce a few weeks ago, and went to the store for it. They didn't carry any kind of oyster sauce. I was disappointed.
This was a good snippet about your childhood Matt.
Kids are cute.
I so enjoy reading your writings....you make me laugh and think....I like how you saw yourself with your Mother rowing...you'd be a great parent, just don't name your child oyster boy
...'til the next
hahaha that's hilarious! i've never seen this brand of oyster sauce; i don't remember which brand my parents usually get, but i don't think the labels are quite as interesting as yours.
Your Oyster Boy is not the kind of guy I'd go for, but whatever... floats your boat.
I bought a jar of oyster sauce a while back. How are you supposed to use this!? I tried stir-frying broccoli with it and didn't actually expect it to taste like OYSTERS! Ew. (As stupid as that sounds, hoisin sauce doesn't taste like seafood!) Are you only supposed to use a tiny amount?
we use this one too!
@Roadlesstaken - but I was... lol.
@macphoto - thanks, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for recommending.
@CurryPuffy - I think they have several brands - I've yet to strayed from this brand.
@Fatcat723 - I'm sure you'll chuckle when you find it on the shelf.
@ZSA_MD - that's odd... most supermarkets should have it by now. I hope you don't have to drive all the way to St. Louis to get it.
@secade - they certainly are.
@GracePrince - always glad to see you dropping by... thank you. (ok - I won't name my kid oyster boy)
@kunhuo42 - I think it's a pretty popular brand. Next time you chat with your mom - ask her about the oyster sauce (she'll probably be wondering why you're asking...)
@Senlin - you can dip some freshly boiled veggies (like kai lan or Chinese broccoli ) in it. It's pretty salty so use it sparingly. You can also use it as a base for making sauces. (create a slurry of corn starch and water, add pepper, a dash of soy sauce, a bit of sesame seed oil and oyster sauce. In a wok, add some oil, once it's hot, add some scallions and/or green onions, a bit of ginger, a bit of garlic - stir them around a bit to release the flavours. Add the slurry and stir. You may have to add a bit more water if it's too thick. You can also add a touch of sugar to balance the saltiness. Once it is boiling, turn it down and have a taste. Adjust the seasoning, add a bit more oyster sauce if it's not rich enough etc...
i laughed actually when you said little brat. hahaha. we have a term for that here. it's bratinella (bra-tea-ne (same with nest)-la (like umbrella)
Very cute how you viewed the world back then. Oysters as vegetables growing on the water, ripe for the picking. Ha ha...
@Senlin - "whatever floats your boat" - Ha ha... you're very funny. Nice pun.
I'm not a fan of Oysters,,
Oyster boys,,, maybe.
*~matthew~*
Wow...if only Oysters floated on plants in the water....
Where are the food photos?!
I used to always have that brand of oyster sauce... back before this other brand took over and sold it for cheaper.
Pretty observant. The only thing that I looked at on that bottle was the nutrition facts =/
@Renatojr3 - lol... uhm.... salamat po.
@christao408 - what can I say... I was naive.
@bleuzeus - I have to admit raw oysters do look kinda gross (although I like them).
@inchyguy - yeah, I was such a dork back then.
@yang1815 - I haven't been cooking lately.
@Devilzgaysianboi - no wonder you look so healthy.
