  • The oddly shaped pizza

After decades of reading Chris' entries on home made pizza, I decided to try it out for myself.  I defrosted the bag of pizza dough one day.   As luck would have it, I remembered about the defrosted pizza dough on Friday night.  I looked around in the fridge for some ingredients and found some oyster mushrooms (those big ones), a jar of tomato sauce and some mozzarella cheese.

I sauteed the mushrooms with some onions and added some garlic.  With the tomato sauce it looked a bit watery so I heated it up to reduce it a bit and also added some dried oregano, basil, parsley and pepper.   The dough was interesting.  I've helped my mom baked a few times but I couldn't figure out how to flatten the dough to fit the cookie sheet.  I pressed and pulled and cursed.   Some spots were thin and the edges were thick.  It ended up with this odd shaped.  I didn't have any basil so I got some chives from my pot and threw it on.  It was already close to 10PM so I was getting pretty hungry.

    before:

    after cooking:

The dough was just a shade under done in the thicker sections along the edge.  The cheese could
have been grated.  I could have used a bit more tomato sauce, perhaps some olive oil and
some meats would be good too.

I just read Chris's entry - even his friend's kids made better pizza.

  • LOL Can we even call that a shape?

  • Not too odd a shape though, I found it pretty cute, just like a painting. Or a piece of edible art work, I suppose!

  • @twentyse7enn - it almost looks like I sat on it.

@CurryPuffy - uhm... next time I'll make it for you and see if you still have the same opinion.  hahahaha....

  • It looks fine. It's not the shape, but the taste that counts. So how did it taste? I would like to send you a rolling pin for your birthday Mattie. When is it?

  • Eh, as long as it taste good I don't care what shape it's in!

  • @ZSA_MD - it tasted ok... not the greatest pizza I've had.  I found a rolling pin last week at my dad's kitchen (no one uses it).  It's one that I got my mom years ago.  So it's "coming home".  sort of...  But I do appreciate your offer - that's so sweet of you.

  • @Roadlesstaken - the taste was ok - I've had better pizzas before.  But it was very late and I was hungry so it hit the spot.

  • I think it looks great! Better than your muffins
One time I put tomato sauce and prepackaged shredded cheese on a piece of toast to simulate pizza. I don't think I need to say any more about how awful it was. Two words: soggy toast.

(BTW, thanks for the tips regarding oyster sauce. I'll try following your suggestions next time.)

  • Try, try again.  :)   I'm sure it will be better next time.

  • Haha. That is a funny shaped pizza, but as long as it taste good- who cares?!

  • Decades, huh?  Does it feel like that long?  =P

There's plenty of rectangular pizza in Italy, so no worries about the shape.  Something I've found about the dough is that sometimes it needs to rest a few minutes if it isn't stretching out nicely.  I also use my fingertips instead of a rolling pin, pressing from the center outwards and rotating the dough as I go.  That helps it stretch fairly evenly.  When you cook it, use the absolute highest heat you can get your oven to.

You didn't share the most important information, though: how did it taste?

  • Shape does not matter - how did it taste!!!!

  • Still looks yummy though!

  • hahaha  at least your pizza was edible!  that reminds me a bit of my attempt at pizza.  the crust did not come out very well...  the yeast didn't rise properly.  maybe i'll try again this summer since the weather will be nice and hot.

  • You should try making your own dough next time too!

  • I'm going to make an hexagonal pizza.

  • @Senlin - it was a lot better than the last batch of muffins.

@JL789 - yeah I will.  I have to buy some more ingredients.

@tsotofu - hahaha... that's a nice way of putting it.

@Dezinerdreams - it tasted ok, I had better ones.

@christao408 - the highest heat?  I think this was at 400 something.  I'll have to see if I can blast it higher.  It tasted ok - passable but it's not something I would serve a guest.

@Fatcat723 - gosh, everyone is asking about the taste!  It was ok, I was very hungry as it was late in the night.  The ones from the pizzerias are a lot better.  The dough was uneven so the thick part was about 95% done - still a bit moist.  I could have used a bit more cheese.

@oxyGENE_08 -  it filled my tummy.

@kunhuo42 - this was a supermarket dough.  I have never tried making dough on my own yet.

    @CareyGLY - scary... that's just too scary.

@yang1815 - what would you put on it?

  • @ElusiveWords - 500-550 F is really quite good if you can get your oven there.  Having a bread or pizza stone helps regulate the temperature better and also helps give you a crisper crust instead of cooking on a tray, which results in a bit of steaming of the bottom of the crust.

  • @ElusiveWords - Hmmm...  Perhaps a big sausage, a couple of meat balls and some white cream sauce.  :D

  • Hmm,, well it looks good to me
    specially after it was baked.

    I love homemade pizza !!

  • THAT LOOKS SO GOOD. OH MY / YOUR / THEIR / NO GOD.

  • OK so it was your 'first' attempt - right ? Congratulate yourself for even trying and what rule book says a Pizza has to be round or perfectly shaped ?

You've made your first one, now you know where you went wrong and the next one will be better.

  • I made pizza dough from scratch once, it's not even rectangle...

  • @CurryPuffy - I agree with you & many other People who made the comments in regards to the shape.. on that.Who cares about the Shape..As long as it tastes good..And it looks yummy too..Ha! I would really get some laffs if People seen the shapes that I roll my homemade tortillas..I give it a double thumbs up!
