  • Rejuvenation

    I recently wrote on someone's blog that one of the lessons in life that I've learned (and continue to relearn... ) is being comfortable with your own skin.  While there are a lot of things about myself I've grown to accept and even love, I've never been totally comfortable literally with how I look.  I see pictures of myself when I was a boy - the cute kid with dimples.  At every family gathering, some aunt will reach over and pinch my cheeks.  When I entered into my teens, I learned how acne can scar a face and a fragile pride.  It wasn't until university did the acne finally faded away.  I started to become more physically active (mostly squash and running).

    Now after years of being a corporate whore, I need to take better care of myself.  It won't be easy trying to find the time and I need to sacrifice what is left of my own time to do this.  Well, if others can do this, so can I.  While cleaning out my closet this week, I found some of my old running gear.  While I wasn't big on long distance running, I do remember the good feeling that I got after a long run (my long runs are Aaron's warm up runs).  It'll be fun to do this again.

  • fun?  hahahahahahahahah .  I need to do this. but, in my case, it WON'T be fun.

  • Any time you get out to run, walk, exercise, it is a high that you will love. Come on Matt, you can do it.

  • Run Matt Run!!! :)

  • good luck. i hate running though, dieting is so much easier XD.

  • Well if you have fond memories of previous enjoyment, it shouldn't be so much of a 'chore' getting back into it and should go well for you. Good Luck and have fun.

  • Good luck - I have taken to walking --running is beyond my capacity!

  • i hated to run...still do hate it.

    be sure you get the best shoes and move back into it slowly.

  • @Diva_Jyoti_3 - I need to convince myself is fun so I will do it.

    @ZSA_MD - yay... just came back from the gym.

    @oxyGENE_08 - huff, puff, wheeze, gasp, choke...groan.

    @pika_whoosh - I should watch my diet too and add more veggies & fruits.

    @Chatamanda - I hope I can stick to this.  I just have to make it fun so I can keep it up.

    @Fatcat723 - walking is good.  I think on days when I don't want to do anything, I'll just walk for about 30 minutes.

    @buddy71 - yes, I'm taking it easy - more walking than running.

  • @ElusiveWords - lol i just cut the junk when i need to lose weight XD. but more fruit + veg is def a good thing :D .

  • lol  i don't know...  i'm not running too far right now, but i do need to start seriously training next week for my next race!  usually, though, after a race i take a break and then have to start over, and that usually entails running only about 3 miles until i can build up my endurance.  it's all about starting slowly and building up your strength; rushing into it too quickly makes you feel sore and awful (and is a good way to get injured), which is why people give up.  a good way to get motivated is to find someone to run with; another option is to sign up for a race and set that as a goal to work for -- there are usually 5k races all the time, and it's definitely a great goal when getting back into running.  you shouldn't think of running as a chore, or it will be one; find a way to make it something you enjoy and want to do.  my bf likes it because he feels energized after a run; i like it because it clears my head and helps me to start off my day on a high note.

  • Way to go, Matt!  Last January I made the decision to begin running, something that I've never previously enjoyed, and while I have not reached Aaron-like levels (we're holding him up to quite a high standard, aren't we?) I've been able to run pretty much every other day throughout the year.  This past week I haven't run since I pulled my lower back on New Year's Day and am letting it recover before lacing up the shoes again, but I look forward to getting back up to speed.  Good luck with your new initiative!

  • Yep I'm really comfortable naked.

  • Good luck with the exercise goal!  I need to get back into the gym too...

  • @kunhuo42 - thanks for the tips.  I did it nice and slow today at the threadmill with a good warmup and more walking than running.  Oh man... my legs feel a bit tired but not sore.  Do the 2 of you run together?

    @christao408 - it was good slow start today.  I guess you run in the early morning to avoid the heat and humidity?

    @yang1815 - lol Andy...

    @brooklyn2028 - I'm lucky to have a small exercise room in my condo.  I just wish it was a bit bigger so it doesn't feel so crowded.

    @Babyboomerjill - I will - thanks!

  • @ElusiveWords - i got him started on running, but we don't run together often; our schedules usually don't meet up (i prefer running in the morning but he has to be at work early) and i usually end up running longer distances than him.

    @christao408 - lol  i'm just an ok runner; i hang out in the middle of the pack during races.  it's more about achieving personal goals anyway!

  • Move, Run faster, you will  for sure feel good after that!!!

  • @ElusiveWords - Strangely enough, mornings are often the most humid here.  My habit is to run about 7 am, but during the hot season I discovered that if I wait until mid-morning after the sun has burned through the clouds, it is less humid and the heat isn't much of an issue because I'm running indoors, albeit in an open-air room.

  • Consider swimming.  Great exercise and far easier on the joints. Back when I lived in Alexandria, there was a hotel five minutes down the road that would let you use their really nice heated indoor pool for $12 a month.  Need to find something like that where I am now.  Got enough hardware in the leg that running is no longer an option.  Definitely have to be comfortable with yourself.  Shouldn't be that hard for you.  You seem like a good guy to me.  Take care Matt.

  • What is it to be totally comfortable with how we look, anyway?

    When you work out (in the past) and you saw some improvement in your body... didn't you like it and felt good?

    Yes, come on corporate whore, go out and run for a few minutes :P

  • In the past spring and summer I really learned to
    love running... good luck in your pursuit
    *~matthew~*

  • i think you should.  it'll motivate me to get myself back in getting fit again.  i used to be able to jog regularly for at least half hour non-stop back in college days, even during winter!  i too have never been 100% comfortable in my own skin, yes, especially considering the acne years back then.  well, now too actually.  it seems it has always followed me all my life.  sigh... i can't understand why it won't leave me alone even when i'm already in my mid 30s.  hick hick... :(

  • @Toro69 - unfortunately I don't swim (long story...).

    @stepaside_loser - I'm going to be a lot more disciplined this year about working out.  Yes, I did feel great after a long run in the past.

    @bleuzeus - thanks, I hope I can stick to a routine.

    @rudyhou - I can never figure acne out.  I think there's a lot of medication and treatment out there although I don't know which ones are good.  I wonder if it is the tropical heat and oily skin conspiring together.

  • @ElusiveWords - Run tonight for a few minutes? :)

  • yeah, that could be it.  i've been to numerous doctors but what they gave me only worked within the first a couple of months of use.  after that it all went back to how it used to be.  i've given up trying and spending tons on money on doctors.  i'll just have to wait 'till i get much older with hope that the teenage hormones in me will dissipate eventually.
