Jehovah Witness
Does anyone know where I can find some objective information about this group? I've only run across them a couple of times. But my dad is now making serious friends with one of the guys there. I just don't have a good feeling about this. But I have nothing to base it on aside from my biased and largely negative views of this group.

Did you google this group?
@CurryPuffy - yeah, I saw their site. I saw some stuff that was against them. I just don't know which ones to believe.
@ElusiveWords - Perhaps your father does not have any religious beliefs, and they are scouting him out?
My knowledge of them is limited, but usually one does not hear about them in the context of trying get their hands on old folks' money. I think they "just" try to convince others of their believes. I guess your dad is lonely, and the Bible Boy fills this void.
They don't celebrate christmas and birthdays!!! That's enough to keep me away from them.
Stay away from them. They brainwash people into thinking that the world will be coming to an end. And they will be the only ones saved.
True story.
One Saturday morning a pair of those pests came to my door, woke my brother and I up trying to "peddle" their religion and beliefs. It wasn't the first time we'd been bothered with their same old shit so I introduced them to my 140 pound German Shep Bruno. He was in a particularly mean, snarly mood as he hadn't got his fill of screwin' wolves and coyotes while we were out camping in the mountains earlier that week. As soon as I gave the command he dove through the screen, -- the blood curdling screams could be heard for blocks all around as he charged and snapped like a rabid mental wolverine on steroids. My brother and I were pouring our coffee, pissin' ourselves laughing as he chased them down the street.
Going door to door peddling religion like a vacuum, trying to pawn off their bullshit to me just seems wrong. On top of that I think these are the same bastards that will let people, kids die if they need a blood transfusion, - it's not their way. It's 6 AM so I'm in low gear, my noodle isn't running at full capacity yet but I'm pretty sure that's true as well. Yep, I'd be staying clear of these fuckers.
It is a different group. My experience comes from working with one of their community. They do not celebrate any holidays that is true. They insist that their kids date only in the community. The young man I knew was conservative in his approach to life as ordered by the community. I would never attack anyone's religion as it is a linchpin for them. But I am not sure about the exclusiveness required by its members. Check them out on Snoop - maybe something there.
@ElusiveWords - I also learned that the followers are not allowed to get blood transfusions, or else, will be banished. One of my friend's aunt became a believer after being convinced by her friend who belongs to the sect.
Matt, there is a website called 4witness.org that may be some help. It is a non-denominational bunch of Christians providing resources to "witness" or reach out to friends or family members who are in Mormon or Jehovah's Witness "cults" (as they describe them. It may not be the perfect resource but may be a good starting point, particularly this article: http://4witness.org/jehovahs_witness/jw-reach-loved-ones.php.
Another two resources: http://www.soulwinning.info/fr/jw/arguing.htm and http://www.freeminds.org/psychology/cults/confronting-jehovah-s-witness-relatives.html.
As I read through these, I realize there is a lot coming from the "I'm a Christian" background and in this case your Dad isn't a JW, but there is also some information about how the JW are co-opted by "The Watchtower" to believe that nobody else has the right answer. Letting your Dad know some of these things might make him a bit more wary about the motives of his new friend.
Stay away...
I don't know much about them, except they have come to our door also, and I asked them to leave. Chris has some good info it seems.
Stay away. Find Dad some other social activities to fill the void.
i'd be wary of anyone trying to peddle their beliefs on others...it never made sense to me that religion could be sold door-to-door like avon makeup...
@beowulf222 - I think you're right. He loves good conversation and apparently one of the JW guys can talk in depth on a few topics.
@Closure_Theory - @The_Eyes_Of_A_Painter - @Toro69 - thanks for your input, while I think they have good intentions, I don't think dad realizes what he may be committing to. I have to find a way to keep dad active mentally / socially.
@DickDoktorII - I remember you writing about your dog a few times. He sounded like a gentle, loyal but very protective dog. I hope you're doing well Steve.
@Fatcat723 - I will do that, thanks Rob.
@christao408 - Chris - many thanks for doing some digging, it is much appreciated.
@yang1815 - will do Andy, thanks.
@ZSA_MD - thanks for your input, I'll be reading the links in Chris's comments.
@jace1982 - thanks Jason, I appreciate your thoughts on this.
