  • Scenes From My Neighbourhood

It’s been some time since I posted some photos.  When I started to play with my camera again, I forgot how to change a lot of the settings again.  It’s a bit frustrating because I do enjoy photography.  I just wished my mind could remember all of these things.

Since I work from home now, I sometimes will go for a quick walk after work.  I can still catch a few rays by the park and walk around a bit before heading back to make dinner.

One weekend, I went out for walk after dinner and heard music by the park.  It was Portugal Day festival.  The neighbourhood has a large Portuguese heritage.  There was a concert (all in Portuguese of course) as well as some rides.  A lot of folks wore the red and green colours.

A picture of one of the rides (yeah yeah… the guy with the bike is not Portugese).

Since it’s the summer, the Farmer’s Market (2 in my ‘hood!) are on again.  This is in the same park.

I stocked up with some jams, muffins and maple syrup.

This sign started to appear in the ‘hood a couple of years ago around Pride (July 1st in Toronto).  It’s a play on the neighbourhood name of Queen St. West.  A lot of the stores have this on display to support Pride week.

  • Looks like fun. So who is the guy on the bike 0_o ?

  • @vsan79 - I think this is the only way to get you to respond to my entries so quickly… hahaha.  I have no idea who he is.

  • Pretty! Farmers Markets are always nice!

  • I was bored, so I was in xanga poking around. and glad to be the first to post :)

  • Nice to live within walking distance to a park!

  • that park looks like a nice place to hang out

  • Bigger question is, why didn’t you find out who the guy with the bike is?

  • OK, the guy looks cute – need name and address LOL. I love going to our local farmers’ markets. 3 spots here.

  • Nice catching a glimpse of your neighbOUrhood. hehe And I’m pretty sure the reason you took that photo was because of the guy with the bike. hehe

  • Didn’t realize you were from Toronto too!  Have you been to Little Italy? I think it’s a close proximity to the Portuguese area – I’ve never visited there yet.

  • with that kind of farmer’s market, i’d love to live in your neighborhood.  how are the jams and muffins?

  • @ElusiveWords - @vsan79 - matt, you can’t be too careful.  vince has a habit of lurking around xanga waiting for his moments to stalk someone.  creepyyyy….   peace, vince.

  • @rudyhou - @ElusiveWords well he is ‘distracting’ on that pics ;)

  • The first panoramic picture of the park is stunning. I am so glad that your are allowing your camera to exercise a little. It’s about time.

  • I wonder what portuguese food is like…

  • I’ve been wanting to buy some fig jam.  tried it once and it was yummy but now hard to find

  • @Closure_Theory - it is lovely and relaxing, I love these parks in the middle of the city.  It’s a great place to get away for awhile.

@beowulf222 - I also like the interaction with the farmers too.

@vsan79 - bored?  Nah… I think you have a sixth sense for hot guys.

@CurryPuffy - it is nice and I don’t take it for granted.  If I had to move, I would want to be near a park (in addition to public transit).

@buddy71 - it’s a neat park with lots of activities.  I enjoy reading my books there, checking out the various trees, walking around and of course people watching.  It’s a nice place to unwind.

@christao408 - I would love to do some thing called street portraiture.  It’s a bit different than street photography where the shots are candid and there is pretty well no interaction between the photographer and the subject.  With street portraiture, I would engage the subject and make sure he/she was comfortable and stage the shot a bit.  I’m too shy for that and I don’t have a body of work that I can show them.  I want to be able to point them to a photo blog (e.g. Flickr or SmugMug) to show them I’m not just stalking them.  I gotta figure out how to get started on this.

@Fatcat723 - for the other shots, I actually cropped him out – I was kind practicing how to take some moving shots of the ride.  btw – J would not have approved if I had asked for his name and address (not that I would have the guts to do that).

    @oxyGENE_08 - oh Gene, I’m a serious photographer…. hahaha.  (ok – you’re right).

  • @MzKeekz - yes, I’ve been to Little Italy and there is a bit of overlap with the Portuguese area according to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Portugal,_Toronto.

@rudyhou - from another farmer’s market, I purchased Apple Butter (there’s no butter in it).  It is very good.  From the stand in the pictures, I purchased a strawberry rhubarb jam.  I tried it last year and I liked the tartness of the rhubarb which was nicely balanced by the strawberries.

@ZSA_MD - it was nice taking it out for a spin and I need to do it more often.

    @secade - likely Mediterranean style, I don’t think I’ve actually tried it.

@alchemystfury - fig jam, I’ll have to keep an eye for it so I can try it too.

  • @ElusiveWords - I’ve read about that. Sure takes big cojones to be able to walk up to someone and ask to take their picture.

  • @ElusiveWords - your mere description of the jam makes me hungry.

  • @ElusiveWords - Serious in taking “stalkerish” pics :p

  • It looks like a really relaxing park. I also like how they hold so many things in it – the food looks good right about now.

  • love that sign!

  • Really enjoyed the pictures… They’re somehow very homey. I think my neighborhood has something like this too because there’s a lot of large ethnic groups in the area. Greek Day and Irish Day for sure haha. And yay for queers!

  •  Rainbows !

  • @stepaside_loser - Hey Andrew, apologies for the late response. It is a nice park.  It’s not very big but it’s a good place to chill out.

@yang1815 - Hi Andy – sorry for responding so late (I was waiting for your wedding pictures… j/k).  I’m glad you like it!  It’ll be out again next year.

@sturslug - Thank you and sorry for the late response.  it’s taken a long time to gentrify this neighbourhood.  There are still some rough edges and like any big city, crime is a problem.

  • @dw817 - there were lots of them!  Thanks for dropping by.

  • @ElusiveWords -  Thanks ! My friend, Chris, took me out to a GPP and I hadda great time too.

At some point I need to move over these images to Xanga.

  • @ElusiveWords - Just so long as it’s not too much like east european food. I can’t stomach jellied meats…. bleack.
