Let Me Call You Sweetheart
When my siblings and I were young, my mom would tell us that dad used to sing to her when they were dating. She giggled and laughed when she told us the story. We all laughed at this unbelievable story. We’ve never heard dad sing before. Then one day, she was telling the story again when dad was in the room. So he sang the song and pretended to chase after her. We were laughing so hard at the two of them. It was one of the very few times I saw dad out of his typical Asian father role. He continued singing while we laughed hysterically. After he finished, they both went back to whatever they were doing.
I’m not sure why I thought of this tonight. I had a tough time remembering which version of the song they liked. I chose this version because dad also had a deep voice.
Did you sing to your loved ones or vice versa?

My dad sucked at singing. And I’m hardly any better. I never really sang to her, maybe that’s why she left? lol
That’s a sweet song. I’ve been singing more on my own now in the car and when I go hiking with no one around, but I sing sad songs.
Do you sing?
Nice story, Matt. I guess our parents all have a sappy, sentimental side even if we rarely (or perhaps never) see it. As for your question, I sing all the time. When Tawn and I first met, we were driving up to Ayutthaya and I was singing along to a tape of Disney songs he had in the car. I think it made quite an impression on him.
Now, why he decided to continue seeing me after making that impression, I’ll never know.
LOL
I am not much of a singer. I think on my paternal side, the aunts and cousins like to sing folk songs. If I were to sing for someone, esp. someone whose heart I want to try and win over, singing would have a … err, repellent effect.
@christao408 - Must have been a good impression then, eh?
It’s good to see that side of parents sometimes; that’s a good memory. The last guy I dated sang along to the radio on our first date, and I found it quite charming.
That is a neat song, and I thank you for posting this. Such a neat memory to have.
I sang, “Dick in a box” to her. It was a success.
A lovely story. I only sing birthday song =)
I never knew if my parents had a song. Me, I don’t sing to anyone
My mom will not stop singing no matter how much I beg her to STOP. She sings Abba….and John Denver….* face palm*
@KevEats – What song is that? Sounds naughty if you ask me. LOL
Matt, i love sweet memories like these. my dad wasn’t the typical Asian dad. he was pretty darn affectionate, loving and affirmative (which explains why i’m such a sap). he sang and slow danced with mom in the living room all the time. i used to roll my eyes in utter embarrassment then but now i realize how lucky we all were to have him in our lives. let’s hold onto moments like these!
I want someone to serenade me
Preferably while playing an acoustic guitar
@XtremePsionic - I can’t sing. I also forget lyrics except for a few songs. A, B, C, D … is one of the few songs I know. Thanks for the rec.
@christao408 - awww… that’s so cute. I can’t wait for a videoblog with you singing.
@beowulf222 - when I try to sing in J’s car while he’s driving, he just turns up the volume.
@lanney - it can be very charming, I love reading comments like yours, those wonderful snippets of memories. Thanks for visiting.
@ZSA_MD - I’ll always associate this song with my dad. I’m glad you enjoyed the entry.
@KevEats - omg – HAHAHAHA. Encore, encore!!!! (thanks for the rec)
@MichellelyNg - thank you, I don’t remember a lot of songs – thank goodness Happy Birthday is relatively simple.
@Want2FitIn2Fat2Fit - well, if you can’t beat them, join them. Perhaps a duet? (did I just see another face palm?)
@caki730 - oh what wonderful memories, it’s good that he wasn’t the typical Asian dad.
@Wangium - do you have any songs in mind? Does Giuseppe sing to you?
i can’t sing even if my life depends on it
Sadly, no and no.
Any song is fine, actually…
