  • A couple of weeks ago when I had dinner with my dad and my sister, I noticed a table near us with 3 women in their 60's and a man, also in his 60's.  There were 2 boys about 4 and 7.  Judging from the snippets of conversation that drifted over to my table, they were the grandkids.  The grandmother sat between them making sure that they behaved.  She kept telling the older one to stop playing with his Nintendo and the younger boy to stop fidgeting.  The grandmother and grandfather spoke perfect English.  I figured the 2 other women were probably her sisters.

One of of the older women showed the older boy how to use the chopsticks.  But I'm sure it wasn't his first lesson.  The younger boy eventually stopped fidgeting and finally sat down.  His tiny head barely cleared the table.  The grandfather walked by our table to grab a booster chair for him.  I glanced over at the table periodically.  I figure, this is perfect fodder for my blog.  But every time I looked over at them, I was met with a stern glare from the grandmother.  It was the look that she had perfected over the years.  I knew then who wore the pants in that family.  She clearly didn't want me looking at her table and on her grandchildren.  Because of her, I have nothing to write about.

Actually, I'm trying to write another short story.  I am about 3/4 done with the first draft.  As expected, it's all over the place.  It looks like my hair after I just woke up.  I reread it a few times and made some notes on what to do with the next draft.  But some nights, I can only seem to get only a few sentences done.  Sometimes a story line will come to me when I'm very busy with work. But at night, I'll stare at my screen and wonder why the ideas aren't flowing.   I wonder if real writers struggle like this.

Here's a dish I was experimenting with the other night.  It's bitter melon with ground pork in home made black bean sauce.  It was a bit salty.  I had marinated the ground pork with soy sauce, pepper, sesame seed oil and corn starch. I also added some finely chopped preserved vegetables (turnip?) to the ground pork as I was intending this to be used for another dish.  I changed my mind at the last minute when I remembered I had bitter melon in the fridge.  It went very well with a big bowl of rice.

  • Looks and sounds Yummy! I know that look, and have been told I have it down to a science...I don't think so but I'll let my students, friends and family believe that    I know I struggle with things to write, especially when I'm doing a paper, I'll be writing then my mind will go blank...thought it was oldtimers   Good to read you and see your creations again   TY for the comment...I'm a bit short of patience with adults, especially my siblings...good thing I've more patience with my students....'Til The Next

  • Thanks it's good to be blogging again strangely. :]

But I have to give you credit for making bitter melon seem good... that's one thing I've yet to grow an acquired taste for.  Maybe it's because I had a bitter melon soup and I should have tried it on a more smaller scale... ^__^;  Anyhoo good luck with your story!  You probably already know this but sometimes it helps reading it out loud... my grammar sucks at times (okie... often) so that definatey helps me! xD

P.S. Asian grandma's can really be scary at times. lol.  Mine definately wears the pants in my family. haha.

  • Observing people is the best source for any stories. I used to sit in the lobby of the hotels in which I was staying and drink tea and take hours to "read" my paper. I got stories for my classes from the observing. Oh, take time to read you story aloud. Sometimes it will tell you where to go.

  • Ryc: Thank you, Matt. 'An intensive friendship' was a great way to describe our friendship. I currently believe it is up to me to determine how I will feel about my life. I want to continue being friends with John. I believe I have to listen to him more, and actually take in what he is saying. I want to be more supportive and excited about his new relationship with Barry. I think this is already making things better, because we're enjoying each other's company again, and it doesn't seem so hurtful anymore, because I am happy for John that he is happy. I guess that's just how I want things to be.

Ryp: You seem to cook using asian ingrediants a lot. My parents would love for me to do that, too.

It was interesting the way you described the other table. Something I would normally find mundane in life becomes something thought-provoking due to the way you wrote it. You seem to enjoy writing :)

  • if you do something physical, it somehow unlocks creativity- not sure why but it works sometimes. Just wanted to wish you a great 2008!

  • bitter melon...  i've somewhat gotten used to the taste after how many times my parents cooked it for dinner, although i haven't eaten it since i stopped living at home.

ah, writer's block.  my mom always says if you get stuck, just start writing anything no matter what it is; you can always go back and edit it later, and it gets you into a writing mode so that you stop having writer's block.

  • I am waiting to read your new story....
now I am reading Golden Compass to kill times.....

RYC: I saw that too.....is very cute.....
I am thinking when you watch that youtube....you and your bf are holding hand too.....

  • I love bittermelon. I do not eat pork, but I have used the bitter melon in ground beef and sauteed it with tomatoes.  For the readers who think that bitter melon is bitter, try soaking slices of it in salted water after scraping the skin a little.

Such nice entries Matt. I hope you will share your stories with us. I like the way you write.

  • you've got a great writer's voice Matt so stick with it ... my own experience has been the devil's in the editing nary the writing

  • That bittermelon and pork dish looks yummy!  As for the grandma, don't you just hate it when a good story gets squashed by the evil eye?
