  • Sick of Work

I’m sick again with a cold.
I left work early on Monday afternoon to work from home.  My head felt as if the Kodo drummers have been pounding on it.  I took
Tuesday off and slept most of the afternoon.
The much needed rest threw my sleeping pattern off.  Sleep finally came to me around 3 AM.  I went out for a brisk walk  yesterday, had
some herbal tea and contact C.  I felt my body rebounding and warning me to slow down.  I stopped by  Starbucks for a coffee in the afternoon and read a bit. I didn’t feel the least bit guilty even as work piled
up.  The sun was out and I could feel its
rays warming me up.  It felt like a towel
fresh out from the dryer. I shouldn't complain about my workload.  There are others who have it worse than I do.  I complain about the chains from work.  I also know I control my destiny.  I think I'm just literally sick of work.

So I’ve been “working from home” for the past few days.  I play hide and seek with my manager who is
looking for my monthly reports.  I
haven’t shaved since Monday and I look “scruffy”.  I really wish I could grow a beard.  My cousin has a goatee and it looks good on
him.  His fiancée would beg to differ
though.  I mean we have similar genes
right?  But I found out a few years ago
that he has some Japanese blood in him.
Yes, it must be the hairy Japanese gene.

The advantage to working from home is that I can “quit” work
at a reasonable time and make dinner.

This is beef and broccoli in oyster sauce.  I added some garlic, ginger, scallion and an
onion.  I had some leftover preserved (salted)
turnip from the previous day so I threw that in too.  The beef had been marinated in soy sauce,
corn starch, sesame seed oil and a bit of pepper.

I had some Udon noodles in the fridge.  I threw in some pork strips (pre cut from the
supermarket), thinly sliced onions and Napa
cabbage; added some soy sauce and oyster sauce.  I also added some home made hot sauce from my
bf’s mom.  It gave it just a bit of extra
kick.  The only thing I didn’t like about
the pork was the amount of fat.  Most of
it renders out when it's cooked but it’s best to trim it before you cooking.  I also marinated the pork in the
    same marinate above.

My mom used to make this dish during the summer with garden
fresh tomatoes.  In the winter, she would
use tomatoes that she had frozen.  I had
some beef left over from the beef and broccoli dish.  This is actually quite simple.  I fried some onions, added the beef, some
garlic, a can of tomatoes and some frozen peas.
I couldn’t get a smaller chunk of peas from the bag.  It was a bit watery so I made a slurry of
corn starch to thicken it.  I added some
sugar and Worcester sauce.  It's nothing fancy but it's quick.

  • I think we all get into those slumps where we just can't stand work.  Hope you feel better and your few days of "working from home" give you some much needed rest.  Hopefully you'll go back to work feeling refreshed although if you're like me it will take more than just a few days to get out of a slump like this. :(

The food looks yummy as always, especially the noodles.  Me loves stir fried udon. :)  I think that the preserved/salted turnip would've been yummy in the noodles.

  • I need to attend one of your dinner parties. Having one in the Houston area anytime soon? Eh?

  • I think it's appropriate for now to call it scruffy food porn...

So I am demanded by the boyfriend to perform the boyfriend duty of making a Friday night meal next week...
I don't know what to do for veggie yet...
    maybe I'll cheat with salad...

  • I love your delicious concoction of tomato n' peas + beef....goes nice with steam rice!! *drool*doool*
Get well soon!! Spring is in the air, Matt!

  • Yum!!  Get well soon..

  • Get well soon! I was also sick earlier this year too, it was miserable.  I also worked from home for a few days!  The only difference is that you can cook.  Those are all my favorite dishes.  Maybe I should try to cook the tomato beef dish tomorrw.  Have not eaten that for the longest time.  Oh, Worchster sauce, that must have I missed using b4. lol  I will give it a try.

  • awww. hope you get well. here, the temperature's rising and as if everyday i get a headache plus sweating a lot.

so that's what it's called, udon. i wonder if it's the same noodle that yellow cab uses with their charlie chan...

    have a great weekend!

  • Be thankful you don't have that hairy gene!
We all want what we can't have I guess :)
    Feel better!

  • beef? i dont quite like beef... so now you know what to cook for me next time ya, ok? lol just take enough rest and u will recover very quick

  • Your food always looks good. I will have to taste it sometime. Take care of yourself and let your body take care of its own recovery.

  • @gyjcwang - an easy way is simply some steamed veggies w/ oyster sauce on the side.  Let me know how your meal turns out.

  • eww...  i hope you feel better!  i actually am working from home a bit more these days, but that's because i can remotely access my computer from home, and currently i'm trying to focus on putting a poster presentation together.  in some ways it's more convenient and comfortable to work at home.

mmm...  your food pics always make me hungry even if i just ate!

  • ah, the wonders of corn starch eh! ... it's also a good remedy for cold sores too

  • @apocatim - dinner parties?  I'm just cooking for myself - lol.

  • @curry69curry - that was my dinner last night and it was filling.

  • You are not supposed to work when you are sick. Regardless of whether you are at the office or at home. Period. Pamper yourself, and get well first before you can get back to working .

Food looks good though. So eat well.

  • RYC: we are all guilty of it if we are honest with ourselves.

  • ryc: um...no, i am the exception

  • hope you feel better.

  • the food looks so good, especially the udon and the tomato one. please cook for me too

your work life seems to suck, and it seems so pervasive. those "reports" sound awfully like what i am studying about at uni now. i really want to make sure i have a better work/life balance as i approach full-time work after uni. hmm.

  • omg u just made me hungry again. im ready for dinner part 2 lol

    hope u feel better

  • Get well soon =)

  • I feel you on the sleep part. My sleep pattern is always off every night. Somedays I just make sure my body's worn out by the time I get in bed (sometime that backfires). Oh and the being sick part, I hate the feeling of not feeling good, like how I am right now. I like jasmine tea and green tea.

I get you when you say that facial hair looks good on the other person. I tend to try to save my mustache, but I look dirty with it, so I end up shaving once a week just to keep my face looking clean.

    Get well soon =)

  • RYC: In your case make sure you drink the rest as it may help your illness!.

  • you poor thing... but for someone who's sick, you can really cook!!  i'm impressed.  hope the food you made chase away the cold.

  • Are you feeling better now? Nice cooking.

  • @stevew918 - your kitchen must be spotless since you travel so much.  I'm feeling better - thanks.

@ALTRUISTICDREAMER - I love jasmine tea, green tea and a strong oolong tee as well.  Thanks for the chicken soup mini.

    @ZSA_MD - unfortunately our deadlines don't change.

@rudyhou - I guess it's feed a fever and starve a cold or something like that.  It must have worked.

@twistedoff - sometimes cooking helps me relax.

@Sc12EeN17aM3 - thank you for dropping by, I'm feeling better, thanks!

@icebladz - thanks for the well wishes.

@zozoyork - thank you, I feel better now.

@kunhuo42 - hmm... I'll keep posting food pics if should post pictures of you running (or at least your running shoes) so I get the urge to run.

    @Renatojr3 - thanks - it's back to work tomorrow.

  • @ElusiveWords - hahaha  well, i just got new running shoes...  maybe i'll post a picture of them just for you!
