  • For the most part, I enjoy living in my condo.  There are the usual advantages (I don't have to shovel snow, no garden work, no exterior house work and there's security at the front door).  There are several disadvantages.  I have to be considerate of my neighbors so no loud music.  Sometimes I do like to crank things up but I have to be careful.  I also don't get any cross ventilation in my unit because all my windows (tiny ones) face the same direction.  Unless it's really windy, it will take a while to air out my unit.  So I have to open the door to create an airflow.  I keep the door chain on though.  One time, I was in the washroom finishing up and washing my hands when I heard voices right outside the door.  It was my neighbors talking right outside my slightly open door while one of them was fishing for their key.  I wonder if they heard anything... argh.

Parking is also a hassle .  My condo only has a handful of visitors parking spots.  It can be a pain sometimes.  But the biggest pain are the inspections.  The corporation has the right to come in an inspect your unit.  They usually give you a week or two notice.  They check the fire alarms, water leaks, structural stuff... but I hate it.  I'm kinda messy so I have to clean things up.  So guess what I'm doing tonight ... argh!   I have to take all the stuff from my washer / dryer closet out so they can inspect that area.  They left a note saying they may have to check inside my bedroom
closet.  Wah... where am I going to hide my "stuff"?  Maybe I'll throw
them into my oven or into one of my pots.  Or maybe I should stay neat and tidy.

Here's something I picked up at the market.  My little herb garden.  Can you folks name all of them?  Now I have to figure out some interesting things to do with them.

  • I am an absolute newbie for plants, can't name any of them @.@
Same case with me, I can hear voice outside my door, but luckily i can't hear voice next doors =P

  • thanks! I had a great time~ =]

  • The small ( tiny ) leaves are of thyme, the furry leaves are sage, I see basil near the end of the picture and in the forground, and the slightly mauve colored leaves I think are mint. The thin stems are of chives at the far right of the picture. Between the basil and the chives, is cilantro (also known as coriander leaf or chinese parsley.)  They may be a little old, thats why the color. Now that you know the answers to the quiz, you can use one or all of them to garnish or even cook with.

Why can't you be neat Matt? Pick up your clothes, get a hamper and throw them in there. Ok?  I know I know... I won't say any thing more.

  • @ZSA_MD - hee hee... my bf says the same thing too.

  • erm...out of curiosity...
"what business" were you doing in the bathroom?
"what items|" are inside your closet?

    hehe =P

  • I want to live in a condo in the future! Hmm... let me guess... parlsey? Sage? Basil? Hopefully I got some right. I have no clue what the one on the left is.

  • chevril, mint, basil, thyme, chives

  • I totally agree with you about condo living (though I wouldn't have to shovel snow here
I can't name one of those herbs!
Oh, and regarding cats vs. dogs?  http://weblog.xanga.com/CareyGLY/562456508/dogs-vs-cats.html

  • You clean up before they inspect?!

I just leave it the way it is...

Traumatize them so they don't enjoy doing it in the future
plus, the messier the place, the less sanitary they would think it is.
The less sanitary they would think it is, the less likely they'll pick through the stuff

  • hmm...  i recognize some of those herbs, but not all of them.  i should start growing herbs; i've wanted to for a while but for a long time i didn't have someone around who could water them when i was out of town!

  • Was there anything for them to - ahem - hear?

  • Basil, Thyme, sage and maybe mint, chives and coriander?

  • Nice herbs!  That is the problem with condo living: no garden.  But a good plater box and some sunlight and you can at least have fresh herbs with which to cook.

That cross-ventilation thing really makes a difference, doesn't it?  The first condo Tawn and I rented was the same way - south facing without cross-ventilation - and we had to run the air all the time.  The place we bought is at the end of the building and has windows on three sides, so we enjoy quite a good breeze.

Still not growing any herbs, though.  I should do that.

  • @inchyguy - erm... the type of business where you have to sit down.

@mmmagination - aren't real estate prices in Vancouver sky high?

@whonose - I'm sure they heard the toilet flushing.

@christao408 - oh yeah, I don't like "canned air", it can get pretty stale.

  • @ElusiveWords - You have a very intelligent bf. he and I are absolutely correct. Your next post would be...ME, Matt, the Neat Freak".

  • I believe it is. I plan to live with parents for the next few years and then maybe move to Toronto for another job and rent a place there.

  • interesting places to hide your stuff...maybe you and your bf can set a day and organize your condo and stuff some of your herbs looks familiar, but can't name any of them

  • they wanted to check your bedroom closet? whaa? that's ridiculous.

i think that's rosemary at the bottom left. chives at top right. coriander at the top. i think that's vietnamese mint on the bottom right? some sort of mint, anyway :P i don't know what the one in the middle is, as well as that purple one.

herbs are much cheaper to grow than buy!

ps, i never got around to organising myself haha. i actually totally forgot about it until i eventually got around to reading your reply.

  • lol.....Well...I prefer to live in house than condo, because I have too many books, I don't think condo have enough space for me to store it all.......One day when I have a place, you will think it looks like bookstore more than a house...lol

  • When I first started working, I have to inspect homes....heehee...and I understand where you're coming from!

ryc: haha~~ the foam part makes me think of something else....

  • at least the inspection helps keep you tidy, not that you probably need that extra help.

  • @JonasApproved - oh, I do need that extra help.

@curry69curry - can you elaborate on what you were thinking?

@abcyeung - I also have lots of books but I don't have any room to display them.  They are in boxes.

@twistedoff -  yeah, in some units, the vents / pipes run through the bedroom closets.  That's why they want to poke around.

@icebladz - he did that once (it was brutal).

@mmmagination - good plan... keep saving your money.

  • i can name perhaps one, but i have guesses for some others.

it is a cute garden though, i hope it grows well.

    peace *~matthew~*

  • hhmm... let's see, sage, chives, purple basil??, baby mint??, italian basil, thyme, more purple mint/basil??, and is that parsley on the background?
