  • What's in a Xanga name?

I sometimes wonder how you choose your Xanga name.  Some are pretty obvious “John” is well,
John.  By the way, did you know he
subscribes to 800 Xanga blogs?  I
subscribe to a bit over a hundred although some are dormant.  ZSA_MD – when I first saw that name, I
wondered if she was a doctor.  Well – she
is!  I wonder if her children ever told
    her “I don’t feel well – I can’t go to school.”
Brent has AppsScraps – hmm… I wonder if somewhere in there is his
    name.  Sheldon’s Brooklyn2028 – I wonder
if that was from some movie.  Rob’s
    Fatcat723 – from what I remember is from a jazz singer.  I like Mike’s Love_Eternal_Desire – pretty simple
    & straightforward message.

When Albert becomes a successful lawyer and a published
author – I wonder if he will still use spacerboi?  JonasApproved – well, it’s got his stamp
of approval so it must be good.  Zozoyork
    – now there’s an interesting one and a bit mysterious.  Blizzardi – I have this image of a rum based cocktail.  CareyGLY – apparently it’ll take ages to
explain what GLY means.  It can’t be his
initials – perhaps it’s from a place or something to do with his gang of
    friends.

Bennykan – I think his is the only Xanga that I know of with
his real name.  Bleuzeus – a blue Greek
    god?  *scratches head*.   Gary’s
curry69curry – either he likes curry while doing ahem… no, that can’t be
it.  Maybe Gary in Cantonese sounds like curry
(ga-lay?)  But what could that naughty 69
be?  Christao408 – the Chris is obvious,
but I wonder if he is Taoist?  And
    408?  *shrugs*.  Criticaldamage15 – here’s a mouthful and I
think it’s from some game.  Ambrose’s
abcyeung – perhaps the ABC are his initials?
Kevin has a slightly naughty one – Devilzgaysainboi.  Perhaps he’ll change it now that he’s
older.  Dolphin27 – perhaps Patrick was
27 and thinking of a dolphin when he thought of this name.  Jason’s gyjcwang – could the other letters be
part of his name?  Benson’s imagination
    probably was responsible for mmmgination.
    Lcfu – it’s fufu’s name!  Kunhuo42
    – I think this was Aaron’s Chinese name but I don’t remember what the 42
is.  That’s probably how many degrees he’s
going to get.  Stevew918 – I’m sure the
918 is how many flights he takes in a year.

Trendyhedonism – now that’s a catchy name.  ZenPaper – the name always intrigued me but I wished he updated more often.  Vsan79 – I
think Vsan is a play on his name and 79 is for 1979.  Franco’s Tomatoboi – well he simply explains
that his name in Cantonese sounds like tomato.  GracePrince - an elegant name.  And who knows how whonose came up with his name.  I can see Tim in Apocatim but what does the rest mean?  Twistedoff - hmm... I wonder what got twisted off?

As for me, ElusiveWords was simply me trying to describe one of my many writer’s block. And the former Onetonman – was simply a play on wonton mein, one of my favorite meals.

Ok – enough silliness for tonight.  I know I miss quite a few names and there wasn't any slight intended.  So how did you come about your Xanga name?

  • OMG, I love this entry ! esp  curry one, LOL XD
P.S Mine has nothing to do with my name =P

  • I see what number I am on Matt's importance scale on xanga... >:)

the first 2 letters is a taiwanese thing back in the 90's...I can't really find any english translation for it except for trouble maker
c is my middle and chinese name

  • You have great imagination. :)   I do not think I fly 918 times a year, maybe only 917 times, hehe.

  • fyi, it should be tomatoboi instead of Tomatoboi
    I prefer it that way~ =]

  • u dun have mine up there..i think i should change mine,haha

  • mine is explained here

  • lol thanks for having my name up there, gave me a buzz.

my name was due to a previous account i had somewhere else called "bottled up" - like a genie in a bottle lol. and so i wanted to make a xanga account where i could open up and express myself, which required the lid of the bottle to be "twisted off" lol.

now it's my turn. i have always thought "onetonman" was a way of you saying you were fat! i knew the wonton link, but that just emphasised the "fat" bit due to wonton being a food. i didn't know the "man" was for "mein" though. as for elusive words, i thought it was about you wanting to do more with your writing, because i thought it was something you really enjoy. btw, if that's true, a website called storywrite and another called allpoetry might interest you. it's got an active community and i used to use it ages ago to post my "poetry".

  • Well, Fatcat was a nickname I got in college - referring to my lifestyle. It seems I enjoyed the good life as a college student. But that is too far back to remember. The name stuck so I use it here. Ok the 723 is 7/23 my birthday. I did enjoy your post!!.

  • I miss onetonman

    =/

he was like a big bro to me on xanga...

haha and i like my naughty screenname ;] i dont think its gonna change for a while

    *hug*

i kinda copied the screenname from my friend's old screenname

    hellzazngrl

    =]

  • @zozoyork - hmm... what could it be then?

    @gyjcwang - were you a trouble maker?

@stevew918 - I had 3 cups of tea and was up late, so I just started to write.

    @tomatoboi - oops.

@ayu_motosan - I know I missed quite a few names.... sorry.  How did you pick your name?

@AppsScraps - ahhh... another mystery solved.

@twistedoff - oh - hahaha.  I guess there are several meanings for onetonman.

@Fatcat723 - I guess my memory is not what it used to be!

  • @Devilzgaysianboi - I miss onetonman also.

  • It's not really that it's a "long" story in so much as it's a story that's best told in person; with intonation and inflection.
And thanks for not surmising that it's short for uGLY!

  • "spacerboi" came about when I started back in 2002 and when I was still, a "boi". I actually don't recall now why I chose that name, but maybe it has to do with the fact that my email address at the time was "playgroundboy".

And yes, I'm too lazy to switch blog names, so I'm spacerboi until I'm old and wrinkled.

  • What a cool post. I may steal this at a later date! Apocatim is Tim and Apocalypse, a revelation of God's will. I've lived a really odd little life where God allowed or did things that I didn't understand until much much later. It's a long and sordid tale and I started the blog to tell it, but it never stops and so I try to keep my blog about personal and fluffy things rather than a religion rant. hehe. Great post! :)

  • @CareyGLY - and probably best told with some wine too?

  • @apocatim - haha... feel free to "steal it".

  • @ElusiveWords - actually there was a Jazz Singer by such a name way back who was not that well know. But sang smooth listening jazz.

  • you know i'm changing it pretty soon!

  • hahah  thanks for the mention; actually that is not my chinese name, unfortunately.  it's just a word i happened to think appropriate when i started this blog, and now i'm stuck with it.  as for the "42," that is of course in reference to the the answer to the question of life, the universe, and everything (douglas adams).

  • I absolutely loved reading this blog Matt. I wish I had thought of it before you did, and posted it. Kudos to you.

Yeah my daughter and son DID try their tricks on me with their "tummy aches"  and  " feel like throwing up " excuses. I caught on to their act real quick though. I would say, ' ok, if your tummy aches, lets not eat food for a day to let your gut rested, and I will get you some castor oil to take by mouth; and, go to school, if you throw up there, have the nurse call me.'

Every one knows that i am challanged in the IT field. I had absolutely no idea that there was a site like xanga available for people to post their thoughts. After I retire dfrom medicine, my daughter Saadia, signed me in, and gave me that user name. I didn't like it; it felt like i was touting my degree or whatever. Now its too late.

    Sorry about the long comment.

    Loved the post darling!

  • Aw, this is such a delightfully cute post. You know how to have fun with blog entries, Matt, and I love you so much more for that!

  • Mine is a combo of my nicknames. Lydja and Gillers....which are a play off my real name, Lydia Gillis. So I just put it all together. However, people who don't know me really well think that Lydja Gillers is my real name just squished together. I find it a bit funny and understandable.

  • @kunhuo42 - oh dear, my poor memory - time to take some ginko pills.

  • @ZSA_MD - lol.... I figure moms have a 6th sense about these "illnesses".  But a mom who is also a doctor, well - I wouldn't have even bothered.  I think there is now a way you can change your Xanga name.

  • Mine was really random.  I had a tub of antiseptic teatree cream sitting infront of me and I like the number seven...
I may change the name one day...or maybe not...we shall see.

  • Good post. Mine was from a Bloom County cartoon strip where they play a record backwards and it says "DEVIL BUNNIES! I SNORT THE NOSE, LUCIFER! BANANA! BANANA!"

  • Haha, you're gonna laugh at the story behind my name.  I picked it after Posh Spice's first son and at first I added "28" to the end but someone already used it, so I added the "20" to get "2028".

And I agree with one of the other comments.  I loved your "onetonman" screen name.

  • @ElusiveWords - it's just a modification of a current clothing brand : zooyork =P

  • @brooklyn2028 - lol... I would have never guessed.

  • @tea7tree - it's a bit of a tongue twister too!

  • @LydJaGillers - interesting, most people I know just have one nickname.

  • "christao" dates back to my first email account ever, with earthlink.  When I called to set up my account I didn't realize I would have to choose a user name on the spot.  I had been engaged in a long series of emails discussing the Tao Te Ching with a friend and so after a half-moment's thought, I coined "christao" as a nickname that approximated my full name, "Christopher".  408 is the telephone area code I grew up in, although the original nickname was "christao17", a reference to the particular chapter of the Tao Te Ching that I found very interesting.

    So now you know, Oneton.

  • @ElusiveWords - yes. I know I read about it. But after such a long time of being on xanga, where all my friends know me by this name, I just shrug it off.

  • My name, to me, is pretty self-explanatory.  Well, maybe not anymore.  For quite some time I used this site only as a place to post my (quite depressing) poetry and had another "real" xanga.  Then way too many of my friends found my other one so I just shifted over here.  My other xanga was "sondern", which in German literally means "to separate". How clever looking back!  It has a more common definition but I have long since forgotten.

    Great post!

  • Haha I wonder the same things too when it comes to AIM screen names. Anyhow my xanga name is inspired by Wong Kar Wai's films In the Mood for Love and 2046. Amazing films.

  • You said, “Ambrose’s abcyeung – perhaps the ABC are his initials?”

I think ABC means American-born Chinese. Yeung is a surname. From the spelling I know he/she came from Southern China (most probably Guangdong or Hong Kong). In other parts of China, Yang is used.

  • Wow, Mattie, you can really read my thoughts, "ga-lay" is indeed my nickname, as it rhymes with you know what....the numbering system is nothing anything thought provoking, just me being.....naughty....ahem....*blush**blush*

  • Great idea for a post, and nicely written, too :)

Some of your comments are rather naughty... e.g. "I wonder what got twisted off?"--I remember thinking that too! ;D

  • i spent half of my morning at work one day thinking up my new screenname. i used to use jonas77 because jonas was taken (otherwise i always go for that) but i've grown out of the pager code phase. 77 = my initials JT. people would always think it was my birthday or birthyear, which is also what i assume of others. so yeah ... a few hours into work in the morning and this screenname just hit me. JONASAPPROVED!™

  • onetonman. lawl
    very funny post!
mine's just me, a chick with a camera. simple enough.

  • nice. =)

easy. at the time I was craving a cupcake. Cupcake was taken. I love cupcakes, but cupcakelove was also taken..i was too lazy to think up a new name so I added the 'ly' at the end and tada!

    cupcakelovely was born!

yea, not much thought or meaning behind that name.

  • My friends would sing "Secret Asian Man", in the Secret Agent Man tune back in high school.  I'm not sure why, but it stuck.

  • because I love tiramisu <3333

  • @chickwcamera - hahaaha - that's a cute picture of the chick w/ camera

@cupcakelovely - thanks for dropping by.

    @luvtiramizu - mmmm....tiramisu

    @SecretAsian_Man - there's a website with your name!

@Senlin - hahaha - me, naughty?  *innocent look*

    @curry69curry - ah ha!  I knew it.

@Rm2046 - oh... I always thought it was Room 2046

@choyshinglin - I think he's from Hong Kong but I'm not really sure.

@christao408 - don't you hate it when you have to think of a name on the spot?

  • Re: "Secret Asian Man"

Yeah! It's a comic strip. I'm pretty sure I've seen it in the Sunday newspaper around here (San Jose).

    Check it out: http://www.secretasianman.com/home.htm

  • hahaha...so you know my name huuh =p

  • Yeah...abc is my full chinese name intial....

  • mine's actually my name plus my favorite number. renato + junior + 3. besides it's the same as my other accounts.

  • yes, this was well thought out, i loved reading it...

especially since you were kind enough to include my odd screen name.

i would love to say I have a wonderful story of the creative process of my "bleuzeus"

but alas, it's just something that came to me one night as I needed to create an

e-mail address, simple as that. I am but a greek god only to my bleu self.

    have a wonderful weekend,

      *~matthew~*
