It was one of those mixed days yesterday. I took my dad for another medical appointment. It wasn’t the greatest news from the doctor and he has to come back in January for some follow up treatment. We went to dimsum at restaurant we had frequented for many years. I was surprised he ate so much considering it wasn’t noon. But it’s always good to watch him finish everything. I always worry when he doesn’t eat. He talked about the bottles of wine he received from his brother in law, the family, our work and the cost of medicine. It was one of those conversations that seemed to go all over the place.
When we left, there was a car that park very close to my car on the driver’s side. It was about a foot or two past the line. I stood back to see if anyone from the restaurant or the stores would notice and come running out. But no one did. I took out my key, put it on my left hand and held it very close to the other car as I squeezed my fat ass through the gap. I made it in while wiping the salt stains clean on the side of my car. I didn’t key his car even though I really wanted to. Maybe I do have the Christmas spirit in me after all.
Later that night, my bf and I watched Jay Chou performed at the Air Canada Centre. Aside from watching him on my bf’s dvd, I don’t really know a lot of his songs or his movies. You can see Sheldon’s review, pics and videos here. The show was very good and it’s obvious he has many, loyal and passionate fans. I was very impressed with him and the show. He comes across as confident without being cocky and at times he almost seems modest. He’s generous and shared the stage with some other singers. He interlaced his show with excerpts from movies that he’s done. There was also a very interesting and lively piano “duel” and a quirky western tune too. I was also surprised that in addition to the piano and guitar, Jay also did a brief number on the drums and I think a Guzheng. My bf tried to translate some of the Mandarin dialogue but it was tough to hear my bf with all the screaming girls behind us. “I love you Jay!”… yikes. All in all – he’s very entertaining, polished and left me hanging for more. It was great to hang out with my bf in the middle of the week. We rarely get to do that because of our work schedules. All in all – it was a very nice way to end the day.
I was thinking of heading out to do some shopping but it's snowing now. I also have to find my glove. I only have one of them. Odd....

Ah but didn't you know, DimSum can cure most ills!
Glad that your dad had a healthy appetite. Also the conversation seems good since he is talkative and not just quiet. Glad you like the concert too. It was so great. Luckily I didn't have too many screaming girls behind me.
He had a concert on Christmas Eve at USC last year, but I didn't get to go. I heard it was goo.
I hope your Dad feels better!
When I was in HK last week, my mom has a greater appetite and more talkative than I. I understand how you feel, as I was very happy to see that also. In LA, some chinese shopping area have very narrow parking spaces. There were times I had to go into the car from the passenger side if a car on the other side parked way too close. Guess you and I need to start some dimsum diet?
Ah, mixed days. Sorry to hear that the news from the doctor wasn't the best but, as you say, good that your father had a healthy appetite. Every day seems to have some ups and some downs in life.
Lucky you, getting to see Jay Chou in concert. Back when I lived in HKG and the years after, I was quite in tune with the cantopop scene. Since then I'm out of touch, though. We don't get many concerts in BKK from Chinese artists. Some K-pop and a few J-pop acts but those are all bubblegum.
Concert sounds great - Dad's eating was very good!! And you did not key the card! Merry Christmas - we will not mention cleaning the car
Hey! It snowed here in Vancouver. I heard it's pretty bad in central Canada. How is it in Toronto?
Good thing you didn't do anything to his car. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the car on his other side was big and didn't leave much room? Happened to me at the grocery store the other day, but I managed to squeeze in.
I probably stole the other one. It's been known to happen.
Ah, I have been known to have those thoughts as well, and I do imagine
myself keying someone else's vehicle, but I know I'd never actually do it.
BUT, I want to...
Happy Holidays mate, I hope the season shines brightly on you and all those
around you.
Peace *~matthew~*
dim sum's always nice in the chilly winter. I've probably gained an extra two pounds just to keep warm, but it's been slowly burning off as I swim or do cardio everyday. Cardio warms me up too.
Hey know what? I feel really scared. My dad suffered a stroke this year and just last week, my mom was rushed to the hospital. She was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Her eyes were all bloody red.
Gosh...I think I'm the only person who thinks Jay Chou was overrated. Yes...he's better than most of the HK singers who come to Toronto (probably except Eason since I heard he was super cool, but I didn't watch him). I could barely make out what he was singing half the time (and no, it wasn't his style that you can't hear him, but the quality of the sound and the fact that the music was louder than his voice), and I expected more dancing which I didn't get much.
His jokes weren't even all that funny......and especially when he said that his style is that no one could understand what he was singing.....bleh
And some of the better songs that I liked, he either didn't perform or it didn't come out too great. But at least he performed 開不了口, but when he sang 聽媽媽的話, I honestly expected a bit more show......and he was off key when he was singing part of it.....dissapointed.
Hope by January, the news will be good about dad. When you go out buy extra pairs of gloves and sick a pair in each of your winter coats. You will never lose them again.
yum, dim sum! i'm looking forward to seeing some friends over dim sum when i'm back home.
hmm... the curious incident of the missing glove in the night-time =P
I havn't been to the Asian Pop concerts for ages....when was the very last one.........hm...the Anita Mui last!
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Jay, for some reason I find other musicians more... musical?
I wish more Asian pop stars would come to N.A. more often. hehe, it would give me an excuse to leave O-town. ugh. lol.
happy holidays, matt!
