  • Your vote counts

Without the "pressure" of Xanga's blogathon, I've reverted back to sporadic and mundane entries.  sad

There's an election going on in Canada.  I always view the campaign promises and rhetoric with a healthy sense of skepticism.  But I do go out and cast my vote.  I was watching the news the other day and was disappointed that a lot of my fellow Canadians just don't take their civic responsibility seriously.  One person said she never understood politics so she didn't vote.  I'm sure some will say it's only 1 vote, so it's not going to make a difference.

Yet, in many countries - people line up, sometimes putting their lives in danger just to vote.  In some countries, people don't even get a chance to vote.  Some folks just don't understand how fortunate they are until they lose what they have.

It's one of the most simple, basic civic responsibility we have.  I just can't figure out why people simply just shrug it off.

  • they dont think of the consequences of not voting..i.e the bush idiot in office

  • My girlfriend was like that.  She used to hate the Republicans with a fiery passion, but she didn't vote in 2008.  In 2010, I kind of got on to her about not voting last time and I pestered her until she did, even though she voted for different people than I did.

  • I feel the same way you do. But I am disgusted we are having our 4th election in 7 years!!

Nothing drives me nuts like politics and politicians.

  • Perhaps they just have no faith in the politicians or the government in general.

  • I get the feeling most people really don't care but complain about the results anyway.

  • People vote here but always for the wrong person. =/

  • @thesexydevilgirl - true, so true.

@democrab - good for you!  (although I'm sure she must have thought you were very annoying)

@Bricker59 - I agree, we didn't need an election and each party have their own faults.  But they insist on these games of brinkmanship.

@yang1815 - perhaps so, but I think not voting and apathy just makes things worse.

@Fatcat723 - yes, they are quick to complain aren't they?

@oxyGENE_08 - I think the Philippines is one of the countries that know how precious this civic right is.  Yes, there will always be corruption, vote buying, ballot boxes being stolen, stuffed etc... Democracy can be slow and painful.

  • @ElusiveWords - Oh yeah huge voting turn-out every election but the problem is a lot of people gets tired of voting cos nothing really happens. Election here is merely a popularity contest.
