  • Some things I miss

    There are a lot of things I miss doing.

    1.  Washing my car by hand.  I like doing this on a nice, warm & cloudy summer day.  I could spend hours gently washing my car, going through every inch and cringing everytime I find a nick or a scratch.  My condo doesn't have a spot to wash cars.  There are some car washing bays where you pay a few bucks for a few minutes of water.  But there's always a line up and you can't spend hours in there.  There are also washing restrictions ... no more suds going down our sewers.

    2.  Doing absolutely nothing on a weekend.  My weekend is jammed especially on Sundays.  I jam all my chores into that day.  It's a good day if I can get half of them done.  I try to chip away some of it during the weekday but a lot of times, I come home late from work.  It seemed so long ago that I could just do nothing on the weekend.  My only worries was just feeding myself.  I could get used to being a vegetable.

    3.  I used to spend hours reading and exploring Xanga, Blogger and other sites.  Now I can barely keep up with my subscriptions and the few I follow elsewhere.  It was always interesting finding new blogs, to see the different styles of writing and admire their creativity.

    4.  Quiet time listening to music. I used to have time to just sit and follow the lyrics.  Nowadays, I just listen to it when I drive or as background when I'm puttering around the house.

    5.  Cooking with my mom.  One of the things we did together was wrapping wontons.  Our family were voracious eaters of wontons.  It was just like waving raw meat in front of a tiger.  So on Sunday mornings, we would wrap dozens and dozens of these delicious and plump wontons.  They were filled with pork & shrimp,  (some didn't have shrimp because my brother hates shrimp).  It would take about an hour or so of wrapping.  During that time, mom and I would just sit and chat.  They weren't weighty matters - it was just a chance for her to chat with me.

    6.  Being able to sleep within minutes of jumping into my bed.  I average about 5 hours of sleep on a good night.  No matter how tired I am, by the time I get into bed - I become wide awake.

    7.  Posing nude. (ok... just kidding)

    8.  Getting drunk.  I actually don't miss this but I do miss the freedom to just get completely wasted.  I have to worry about getting a call at night to drive over to dad's place (it's happen a couple of times) to check in on him.

    9.  Writing regularly keeps me sane.  Since I don't write regularly I think I'm slowly going insane.  But if I'm going insane, would I be able to detect my growing insanity?

    10.  Calvin and Hobbes.

  • You should write "make blog" in your schedule every other day then to help with your sanity.

  • i hear ya. time is gets more precious as we age. i'm now convinced that the most "successful" people in life are those who get to spend the most quality time with their loved ones. do you ever write for yourself, aside from your xanga?  i keep a separate, private journal (combination of paper and laptop files) that helps me keep perspective and stay sane. just a thought... you're lucky to have had such a good relationship with your mom.

  • Having settling down far away from home now, I can understand how I miss item no.5. *sigh*

  • i'm pretty much the same with all those points, except i'd rather not wash my car by hand, and i used to help my mom wrap lumpias haha!

  • i can help with #1 and #7.

  • Are you sure #3 doesn't stem from the fact that you have many more subscribers now?

  • I can agree with most of those - however I never enjoyed washing my car - posing nude - nor getting drunk. Love Calvin and Hobbs!

  • #3 totally applies to me as well! perhaps i'm getting lazy! i hope that soon you can get back to doing the things you want to do! =)

  • The world became a lesser place when we lost Calvin and Hobbs.

  • I purchased a newspaper the very last day Calvin and Hobbes was published. Come to think of it, I still have it... I should really get that framed.

  • Yeah 2 and 5 are hard for me too.  Don't know what 10 is.

  • haven't washed my car by hand in a long time, but it needs to be done!  i wouldn't be able to do nothing... i'd go crazy from boredom, since i am one of those people that has to be doing SOMETHING.  i miss wrapping won tons with my mom, too.  i agree, it was a fun time to sit and chat.  yay, calvin and hobbs!  great comic strip, and surprisingly educational.

  • Some of these things I believe you can still do! It's just a matter of finding and allotting the right time to do them. #7...you can do it all the time though. hehehe

  • posing nude.. my favorite!

  • I miss washing my car as well. When I was younger, you can bet my car was sparkling clean. I'd wash it inside out and do a wax job on it. But, things change, life changes and our priorities are different. I still keep my car shining like the best of them. But, now I pay a dude to do it for me.

  • Let's do number #1 together! I can completely relate to #4... and I want to hear a story about #7. Maybe you can share wonton wrapping with one of your close friends :]

  • I also derive satisfaction from washing my car :) Maybe it's because there's a visible end result of our hard work.

    I have a lot of spare time at the moment - I wouldn't mind giving you some, if you'd pay me handsomely for it.

    I wonder when I see the day where you write that you have free time to explore and do as you please. Next year? 2 years from now?

  • wrapping wontons??? i want i want!!! lol

  • I love Calvin and Hobbs. The fact that you have such a good memory of wrapping the wontons with your mom, has to make you feel good. Memories like those are treasures beyond measure. I like to wash my car too. I used to do that a lot. But now I get too tired. So my son, who is obsessed with clean cars, does it for me.

    Lots of love and hugs Matt.

  • @Roadlesstaken - lol... I should have thought of that!

    @caki730 - I don't have a separate journal, this is it.  It's been some time since my mom passed away and I still miss her a lot.

    @CurryPuffy - *hugs* Gary.  I don't know how long you've settled in the US.  It must be very tough to cope with this.

    @JonasApproved - oh man, I love lumpias and spring rolls.  I helped my mom wrapped those too (mine were always the weird looking ones).

    @wutuwaitn4 - I have a funny feeling you wash the car while naked.

    @Wangium - no, it's more a function of the amount of time.  I don't really have that much subscribers (291).  A lot of them are inactive.

    @Fatcat723 - yay - a Calvin and Hobbes fan!

    @jace1982 - I hope so too Jason.  I hope you're doing well.

    @Bricker59 - I agree with you 100%!

    @supanamja - you do?  Oh wow... you should get that framed.

    @yang1815 - #10 was a comic strip.

    @oxyGENE_08 - lol... I have to be careful when I do #7.

    @Justin_DeBin - yay!

    @kunhuo42 - eating wontons and reading Calvin & Hobbes - now that's my idea of a perfect weekend.  hahaha...

    @poemas_rotos - *blush*

    @The_Eyes_Of_A_Painter - yah, I got to find a decent car detailer.

    @Devilzgaysianboi - no story about #7.  I should do some cooking with friends - great idea.

    @stepaside_loser - so I have to fly you up here to wash my car and then pay you to sit around doing nothing after that?  Hmm.... (btw - that was a  pretty good question you posed.)

    @lcfu - I was not a skillful wonton wrapper.  hahaha....

  • @ZSA_MD - thanks for the kind words and for the rec.  Some times I turn around and there are so many things that remind me of my mom.  I hope your knee is feeling better.

  • @ElusiveWords - hug. 9 years since i lost my dad. me too. that's one of the many reasons why i enjoy reading about you and your dad.

  • no.3 - i'm pretty sure i have tons more free time than you but even i have a hard time in keeping up with my xanga subscriptions.

    no.6 - i NEVER sleep within minutes of jumping into my bed, ever since teenage years.

    no.7 - i bet you want to.  otherwise, you wouldn't even mentioned it here.

    no.8 - NEVER got drunk.  EVER.

    no.9 - yes, writing helps to keep me sane too.  but when i'm not, i read.  it helps to transport me to an imaginary world for a little while.

    no.10 - didn't know the comic strip is no longer published.

  • @ElusiveWords - Just don't post them online! =P

  • Funny, but I was just thinking of the car wash issue yesterday.  The two condos we've lived in here in Bangkok don't have any space for washing cars (although the one across from us does and people wash cars just below my windows too early in the morning!).  I miss being able to wash my own car.

    As for the rest of it, you'll find time again.  Life is like a series of waves, with the demands being heavy at some times and less so at others.  Right now the demands are heavy and that's where you need to be focused.

  • @ElusiveWords - like a comic about stripping?
