  • Matman on Batman

I really enjoyed the Batman movie yesterday.  The whole day was pretty good actually. J drove down, we had dinner at a fancy place.  We didn’t plan on having dinner there.  I was really scruffy (didn’t shave for about 4 or 5 days).  We passed by the restaurant and I mentioned the food was pretty good when I ate there with my colleagues.  So we went in.  I told J I wished I had brought my camera.  But he gets so embarrassed when I bring it out to take food pictures.  We hung out at a book store prior to watching the movie.  I couldn’t resist buying a couple of books.

The Dark Knight Rising is probably the best Batman movie.  As a kid, I used to tie a blanket around my neck and pretend I was Batman.  Mom could never figure out why the edges of the blanket would get frayed and dirty.  Until she caught me…

Anne Hathaway was brilliant as the Catwoman.  She added a lot of depth and complexity to the character – a far cry from the previous, one dimension Catwomans.  It’s like drinking a really good wine which has a lot of flavours and notes.  I would love to see her again.  Both Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine were wonderful in their supporting roles.  Tom Hardy – wow, he played the villainous Bane to the hilt without making him seem cartoonish.  If only Heath Ledger were alive to reprise his Joker role.  It would be wonderful to see the two of them together against Batman.  Christian Bale‘s portrayal of Batman / Bruce Wayne is like eating a very well executed meal.  The strength and vulnerability of Batman laid out for all to see.  If I didn’t know any better, he almost made Batman into a Jesus like character.  Christopher Nolan deserves major kudos for rescuing Batman from those previous campy, wimpy Batman movies.  I hope there’s more.  It was well worth the 2 1/2 hours of my time.

As J and I shared a goodnight kiss, I resisted the urge to seduce him with my deep, raspy Batman voice.  I suppose I should get to the gym first before I unveil Matman.

  • I agree that this latest re-make of Batman movies under Nolan’s directing is great! The characters have, as you said, so much more depth, and Ledger’s protraying of the Joker was really, really good (sorry, Jack Nicholson – you sucked as the Joker).

If you had a deep, raspy voice, maybe J was just scared to catch a cold from you.

  • Dude, totally agree. I was blown away with Tom Hardy’s ability to convey so much emotion with just his eyes. Nananana nananana MATTMAN!!!!!

  • Makes me want to watch the film more and more.

  • @beowulf222 - I do sound like I’m about to hork….  hahahaha.  I agree with your assessment of Nicholson as the Joker.

@supanamja - yeah, I don’t know much about Tom Hardy. I just realized he was in Band of Brothers (don’t even remember his character).

  • @KevEats - go … it’s well worth the money!

  • I have not yet seen the movie so no comment there but you think the gym could produce Matman!!?!?!

  • I almost want to watch it once more, just like having another good multi-course meal. Sadly, W didn’t like to watch this kind of movies, so I could never do what you did to J! :)

  • @ElusiveWords - Sorry about the extra t Matman. Tom Hardy was also Eames in Inception.

  • Yeah Matman! LOL
I have yet to watch that movie
I wish someone would wanna go watch it with me

  • Watched the movie this last Saturday on IMAX. Really enjoyed it :)

  • For some reason, I found this movie to contain way too much exposition. Talk, talk, talk… that’s all that seemed to happen. What happened to action movies filled with – gasp! – mindless action?

  • May be you should tie a blanket around J’s neck to keep him there, hehe.

  • It would have been interesting to have the movie at least mention the Joker at some point, but I understand the director didn’t want to out of respect.  Still, would have been cool to hear his laughter in jail or something.

  • I enjoyed the movie too and was surprised by how well Anne Hathaway played that part. Anyway, you scruffy? Wait guys of east Asian descent can be scruffy? hehe And just curious does Batman kiss the same way as Spiderman…upside down? lol

  • I actually enjoyed the previous Batman more. I liked the history.

  • I cannot wait to watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt play Robin!

  • Sorry, can’t comment on any of the batman movies. Never saw a single one!

  • i haven’t seen it.  i heard it’s a 3-hour movie.  i think i’ll just wait for it to come out on dvd.  i don’t like the idea of walking out in the middle of the movie to go to the toilet.  and i KNOW that i will.  since i haven’t seen it, i can’t judge it.  but so far, my favorite cat woman has always been michelle phiffer back when batman was played by michael keaton.  boy, do i feel old.

  • I really like Anne Hathaway as cat woman.  I am glad they found a way to put the cat ears on without looking like a costume.

One terrible thing about the movie is how Talia transformed from a British banker into someone extremely ethnic looking in 3 seconds.  I joked with Giuseppe that she’s like wonder woman where she just spins and turns into someone with ethnic costume.

  • That sounds like such a PG date :(

I was hoping there would be an adventure of your own after the movie ended

  • @ZenPaper - go by yourself during the day and enjoy the movie.  Maybe you’ll be able to avoid the crowds & get a decent seat.  It was still kinda crowded when I went last week).

@kachino - I wouldn’t mind seeing the IMAX version.  I should go back.

@christao408 - I like the balance of action and dialogue.  I deal with too much mindless stuff at work.

@stevew918 - hahaha… but he had to get home.

@Roadlesstaken - it would have been interesting but it could also be too distracting.

@oxyGENE_08 - I don’t have a thick growth – it’s just scruffy and messy.  I know a Korean guy at work who has a beard and it looks good on him.  My cousin is also pretty hairy (chest hair, goatee / moustache).

@CareyGLY - you mean the old ones with Arnold as the iceman, Jack Nicholson as the joker?

@tomatoboi - he does look very good… I wonder if he’ll wear that tight Robin costume.

    @ZSA_MD - eek…  the old ones weren’t that good.

    @rudyhou - I remember that movie too.  Purrr….

@Wangium - I would turn straight for her.

@Devilzgaysianboi - oh Kevin, this blog is rated PG 13.  I can’t put those naughty bits in here.  lol…

  • @ElusiveWords - I’m just a little scruffy too…I don’t have a full on beard. I’m actually keeping the scruffy look for now. hehe And I don’t have much body hair for a Filipino. XD

  • LOL, no silly!
